I am a novice, to be honest! I am good at skectching on paper but am not that good with softwares. I want to start getting acquainted with DAZ 3d. What do you think, will it be a good idea?

I've never used DAZ so I cannot directly help you with that. I can say that any kind of experience with 3D will be a learning experience, weather it sucks or not. :/
