 Not digital at all in the pencils. I increased the contrast and added a filter in iPad's photo app. But the pencils are 2H on bristol board.

As for the rendering hatching I tend to give several strokes in the base and a steady single line in the top of each line. Takes some time but results look nice.

One at a time. It takes a few strokes to build the thicker character of the line, then complete it gradually as you get to the end of each.

Ideally, the hatching should have a clear pattern of direction that defines the form and mass of the shapes as well as the light source. 

In the end, I often get the feeling that I'm simulating with my pencil the shapes I would naturally get with a brushstroke.

Yeah, I've done some work on The Red Ten and I was the original color artist on Epic when Tyler, Matt & I first started it up years ago. I also just wrapped up a short story for the SCAMthology book as well.
