Modeling for second life is pretty straight forward, you make a model a non concaved physics hull and 3 additional LODs and save them as DAE files when you upload them to SL they are converted/combined by the server all you have to do is select all your models in the wizard and your done.
Static models are as easy as that but rigged meshes for avatars are only slightly more complicated. You rig your character to a default skeleton, I believe with no more than 5 bones weighted to a single vertex and then blam-o save and export the same as a static mesh.
There seems to be a minor problem with how Maya exports models and the βjoint offsetsβ feature which as the description implies offests the skeleton however you want even asymmetrically. Though since no one knows why its not working rite now it doesnβt matter how you reposition your skeleton the offsets will return to the default skeleton transforms as if it was rigged that way from the start.
At a later date the developers plan to include custom bone support but there is no word on when thatβs going to happen. On that same note animation support for custom bones is a complete mystery. About the only thing thatβs going to be certain is that something is connected to the root...
there really aren't any tuts for importing stuff into SL other than a few youtube videos that are a bit dated since the last update they pushed changed the UI slightly. It didn't change the process any but some things no longer apply. Its really thatβs straight forward to export things it just takes the background in maya to do it fast enough to pound out the models. Currently its FREE to upload stuff because they haven't decided on in world prices yet but I'm sure its going to an OMG sum since comparable to textures the impact on system resources are going to skyrocket.
But for the tuts that do exist there is this one

and the second life Wiki

the wiki covers the basic stuff and mentions dreams of grandeur that have yet to be realized.

NP, credit is earned where credit is due. after seeing your Arwings I'm thinking about revamping mine to bring it up to spec. The detail is so inspiring it makes me want to improve my own process on mechanical modeling ^^.
I also wanted to ask you if i could have a look at your project files but those are personal so I didn't want to be rude. Digesting finished products is very telling of the process and topo technique for me; same for the textures but those are a little harder to decode
I wish i could use Dolphin to extract the cruiser models from Assault because it really expands the SF universe fleets then again the same could be said for Halo 2-3 with their ships. I digress though, Compliments again on a job well done!

Thanks, there's no secrets though, it's simply polygonal modeling, with a good set of reference pictures, and some guessing.
I can send you all my project files if you want, I don't really mind. Though I used 3ds max 7, and gimp for texturing. Just pm me if you're interested.
I shouldn't take credit for the texturing though, the tutorial in the arwing's description is the source of my current texturing technique.
And I tried to get that model too, to use it as the base for another ship in my mod. I haven't found a decent method of getting it yet.

remember how we were talking bout MW2 awhile back. I think I might've figured out how they can get away with cramming so many poly's into their first person guns. reading up in some forums awhile back i noticed alot of ppl saying that you can get away with not modeling the far side of the gun at all (since it's not gonna be seen anyway). just a thought
