Do you have any tips for shading or outlining cats?
I have recently gone into the drawing trend and am struggling to be happy about my art..

hmm,,
when i do lines i try to keep them a little on the thinner side (this helps me focus more on the actual shape/structure of the body or fur or whatever it may be, rather than filling in the "details" with thicker, blocky lines. thick lines can be really nice in art styles though! this is just my personal preference for my works ;v; ). adding details in the fur or even little lines/squiggles in the face/places where fur is shorter can really bring more depth to things!Β
paying attention to your line weights are good, too! as in, try not to keep the entire lineart one consistent weight, vary it! let the linework be thicker in some places and taper out towards the ends in others. for my linearts i keep most of my brush settings on a really low/0 minimum size (i use sai) to help my lines taper out better
i think another important thing is looking at your art and allowing yourself to try new things every so often! i used to really focus on getting a lot of rounded edges in my linework and then one day i realized that sometimes sharper things aren't necessarily bad. and then later on i realized i was doing a lot of harsh, sharp edges all the time and reminded myself that i could vary it more than i was. i was also really hesitant to change my style in doing things because i was worried that i wouldn't be "true" to my own style in doing so but that's not true! your style can and will change all the time and that's okay!Β
using real cats as references for your drawing to get your bearings and then stylizing them however you want after you get a solid base down can be a good help. i also watched a lot of speedpaints and livestreams to see how other artists approach things and get inspiration from them!Β
oh! another huuuuge thing that has helped me lately was actually caring 'less', in a way, about my lineart. i used to be VERY particular about lining and making sure that everything was connected and perfect. and i always hated how my lines looked. one day i was sitting there looking between my sketch layer and line layer and realized the reason why i always liked my sketches more was because they flowed better. my line weights were always better in sketches, the "imperfections" in the sketches improved the look of the drawing. recently i've been skipping the linework process almost altogether. now i either just really clean up my sketch and go from there or stay mostly zoomed out on the whole drawing and do a more refined sketch with cleaner lines without ACTUALLY zooming in and spending hours on lines alone.Β
as for shading, i'm not much help because most of the time i don't even know what i'm doing!! i never shade with black/gray, though. always use hues of other colors and if you draw digitally you can play around with layer settings. use the multiply layer, lumi & shade layer, shade layer, etc. and experiment with different colors and opacities to see what happens! there are a lot of great shading tutorials out there. i have a favorites folder on here labeled "art help" just dedicated to various kinds of tutorials and brush settings to play around with.Β
