How about Asuka and Homura from Senran Kagura.Β They are rivals and it is hinted at that they have romantic feelings for each other.Β I could picture Cell targeting one of them, and the other tries saving the other.Β In the end, when they try fighting together they end up becoming a double meal for the monster.

Believe me.Β You'd probably like it.Β The games are best known for their fanservice, but there is actually a good amount of depth in them.Β For example, Homura would've been classmates with Asuka, but she was forced to take a life in self-defense which lead to her being exiled by her family.Β They start off as enemies, but they become friends, and at least one character thinks Homura developed romantic feelings for Asuka, and Asuka might reciprocate.Β That is only one of the stories that feature some depth.
Anyway, I do look forward to what else you might have in store.Β Β
