Yevgeny Yevtushenko is my favorite modern Russian poet. His prose is beautiful, as well. Highly enjoyably in English translation, and because he's modern, some of his poems are easier to translate.

For the beginning I recommend to get acquainted with classics to get acquainted with culture of Russia and its great problems :D (Big Grin) Pushkin, Lermontov's Poems, "War and peace" - Tolstoi, " the Crime and punishment ", "Idiot" - Dostoevsky, " the Master and Margarita " - Bulgakov.
