i need your help again dear sir.
i have found what i believe to be a goshawk carcass but was only able to save the skull due to water damage to the smaller bones. head still has flesh and feathers on one side. what do you recommend, boiling it or a water immersion followed by hydrogen peroxide? one side of the skull was in contact with water and has melted all the flesh off. the rest of the head is still covered but with no soft flesh, just skin, tendons and feathers. i dont want to start work on it until i have gotten a second opinion haha. and since you have done epic amounts of bird skullies i thought you'd be the best bet..
hope to hear from you soon!!

Well place the skull somewhere where it can dry out for a week or so, away from vermin or other pests. Once dry get a sharp scalpel or a knife (always wear gloves) and try and remove as much of the dried flesh and tendons as possible. Then buy a product called Demestos (it will be near the bleach in the cleaning section) if you are not able to Demestos, bleach will have to do. Pour the Demestos in to a container and place the skull in it. The Demestos will foam up and begin breaking down all the left over flesh. Use a pair of tweezers to remove the skull from the Demestos because the Demestos will mildly burn your skin. Check the skull every 3 minutes to see how clean it is becoming. You may have to change the Demestos solution depending how dirty it is. Continue the process 3-4 times depending on how clean it is becoming. Make sure you pay close attention to the skull to see if the Demestos has not started to eat away the skull (especially on a Goshawk because the skull would be quite fragile). When the Demestos has finished its job, rinse thoroughly with cold water, then dry with hair dryer. If the skull did not come up as white as you expected i occasionally used some white acyclic paint for touch ups. Hopefully everything works out, inform me on what happens.
Quite a coincidence that you found a Goshawk because i just taxidermied one today, I will post it will once itβs all finished.

i think its a goshawk. im still not totally sure wtf it is. the bird looked like a mid phase goshawk (white to grey) or a smaller white bellied sea eagle. white bird, guessing around 40-50cm when standing, black tips on flight feathers and a dirty white/pale grey back, yellow leg skins and no "pants" which meant it was a fish eater. it was hard to tell because of the state of the feathers. when i was finished preserving the skull i was going to ask about it at the museum.
i was told to avoid bleach at all costs due to it leaching calcium out of the bones and pitting the surface. apparently it doesnt make for well preserved bones, they flake and crumble. ive never tried demestos though. ill do my water soak for a week and then if that doesnt work ill try your demestos idea after its dried off.

I have heard bout the problems with bleach but its been alright working for me. Demestos is a stronger form of bleach. I find that the water treatment does not get the bones very white.
what ever you do dont tell the museum bout the skull. they have very strict laws bout taking animals from thw wild, even if dead.
This is a document bout the conditions of keeping animals.

i havent told anyone but you about it because im just asking advice. but so far the water method is working to deflesh it.
the laws in qld i cant find anything pertaining to the ownership of an eagle. they just state ownership of "protected" and international protected species. hell, they even list we cannot keep a single feather or fur tuft from a protected animal without license. and so far all of my items except for this guy and a black angus skull are international non-protected species and all have gone through customs without me having to flash any licensing or documentation. i think this may be a little different though. gah.

Hey!! I was going to write you and mention my new hummingbird drawing, but you beat me to it! I think this will be my last bird drawing for quite a while though. Unfortunately it's just not that fun for me anymore ; /

At first i thought that the drawing was a photograph. Very colourful and the composition is well set out. Well done. Thats a shame bout the drawings not being fun any more. But the sad truth is that i no longer receive much joy out of the bird drawings.
However, i have been doing a lot of taxidermy but i have been very slack in posting them up. My aim was to get my drawings as life like as possible. you can't get any more life like then the real thing.
