Well it has to succeed first, kickstarter is a place for indie companies to do projects by getting funding for them. So essentially you are pledging for the game to succeed - by pre-ordering your copy. If it does not meet its goal you get the money back. The site explains it all - it is a very popular way to get games funded. The site explains it better than I do. Go see
