Good luck! Some friendly advice if you want it, start with the areas of the highest dark to light contrast or you'll have to do what I did and go back in to beef up little hatch-marks over and over.

Soooo, like you make the darkest areas first you mean and then go from there to gradual lighter tones?

Essentially. I usually make the contour and outlines first (I tend to favor thick outlines) at least very thin and lightly and then work in the shadow masses. Any hatching that's supposed to stand in for a color should be done last so as not to over work the piece because you'll find you don't always need to do any hatching, the color will suggest itself naturally.
