in old russia, it was believed that the devil tried to foil your plans by doing the exact opposite of what you said. so, when they went duck hunting, they said "neither feathers nor down" so that the devil would think they didn't want to get anything and he would end up helping them instead. so, the response is "go to hell" because they want the good luck saying to get to the devil so he will mistakenly help them out.
