The new jumpsuits were long-sleeved to hide the bruising from the needles and the metal clamps. The doctors insisted that the design change was because of the shift in the weather now that autumn was drawing to a close, but Avis was smarter than that. Whenever no one was looking, he wore the sleeves rolled up, letting the unpleasant dark splotches stand out against his skin.
They were rolled down now. Two officials held him almost suspended between them, hands clamped tight around his upper arms to keep him on track. Just where they were taking him, he had no idea, but he knew better than to resist. His wings were folded tightly against his back, still aching from being stretched and clipped.
"Here." There was a sharp tug on one arm as the respective official stopped short.
The other released her share of Avis's weight to consult the clipboard hung clumsily around her neck. "Are you sure? No one told me we were allowing-"
"I'm telling you." Impatience edged the first's voice. He was already following the usual motions to unlock the door in front of him, always keeping one firm hand on Avis. "If there are problems, take it up with someone else."
Avis winced as there was a sudden pressure on his back and he was propelled into an unfamiliar room. It looked... not unlike his, but the scent was strange, the door was on the wrong side, and the sole figure already occupying it was entirely foreign to him.
"Play nice. We can't afford to replace either of you." With that, the reinforced door hissed shut.

As the door opened with a gust of fresh air, the occupant immediately turned their head to observe as a stranger was shoved into his room and the door was shut behind him, blocking the fresh air from coming in, and the artificial filter in the room to kick in again.
The boys blue eyes were locked on the door for a moment before a frown twitched onto his lips. He had known already that others were being forced to share rooms for a while, but he didnβt understand why anyone in this horrible building was making any effort to socialize the inhabitence. It made no sense to him.
Nonetheless, he snapped away from his thoughts to focus on the stranger now sitting on the floor in his room. It felt like the strange person was invading his space, but there was really nothing he could do about it anyways, so he offered a soft smile and headed over, keeping a safe distance as he bent over, resting his hands on his knees so he couldnβt fall over βThey didnβt hurt you, did they?β He asked, a soft, caring tone to his voice βI would really hope they didnβt, cause I know they can be mean sometimes.β
The room was about the same as every other room. A white, symmetric square, but this one had cushioned walls and no window, just a video camera in two corners of the room, and a basket of entertainment and a blanket sat at the back.

Avis's breath quickened as images of sharp teeth bared in a cruel smile flashed irrationally through his head. Even though there was still a generous distance between them, no one besides the doctors had been level with his face since... since...
Another flash, and the thought never finished itself. The flinch was over as soon as he registered that the eyes fixed on him, while still off-putting in the intensity of their color, held no trace of the malice he had expected. The voice was sweet, too, but not in the chemically saccharine way that some of the doctors' were. New pictures arose, depicting grains of sugar scattered across dull linoleum and a blanket not unlike the one pushed into the back of this room, interspersed with words such as friendly and [this one more tentative] safe.
It occurred to him that he might be expected to say something, but the deluge of information had drowned out the stranger's specific words. Oh no. Angry faces in his head, twisted with just a little more disapproval than usual.
He opted for a mostly failsafe "H-hello."
