The eye of Providence is a symbol that dates back to some of the earliest periods of human civilization, though many people like to use the it as a pseudo universal symbol for the Illuminati because of its symbolic presence within the organization's supposed "umbrella groups" and because of its attribution to mass surveillance.

Personally I see it in it's original light as a symbol of intellectual and metaphysical enlightenment. the Ouroboros would make a better symbol for the Illuminati itself because it represents the concept of infinity, something the Illuminati wants to achive (an infinite, global "New World Order" if you would.

Though despite its connections to the Illuminati it's also used by many other noble and fraternal organizations such as the Freemasons and the Oddfellows.
