Btw, I'm also a huge opponent of people that trace and think that they are good. Especially if they fail to notify the viewers that their "art" is based off of someone else's work. FWIW all of the anime characters in my gallery are 100% original from start to finish, as is almost all of my other art (aside from a couple of the landscape pieces that were based off of reference photos such as the mill drawing and lighthouse painting).

I don't mind reference (and I mean actual reference) at all, actually, especially if it's only a loose guideline. Even when it's copied almost directly from a photograph, you're still doing the actual drawing and structuring yourself.
I see a lot of people using Bases as well, but are completely unaware that the vast majority of bases are traced from other people's drawings. I've seen a few original bases with the sole intentions for simplicity and continuity or for teaching anatomy, but as I said, most are simply traced.
I think the most pathetic base I've seen was actually DIRECTLY traced from Lucky Star, hair and all of the original character still intact. That was kind of sad.
