I come from a Russian background, so I was expected to go to Russian school, but I was never any good at it. I watch the Russian news and some films now and then, but otherwise I don't get much of a chance to use it.
Actually, there is generally a lot of linguistic interest in Russian, but we're always told it's so hard (because it is!) so very few people try to learn it properly. Most Russian teachers say you either have to be Russian or live in Russia for years before you can even begin to master it.
Your English is excellent. I admire your decision to study it. A lot of people scrape their way with a foreign language in school and then never study it again.
I've met a lot of Russians on DA who speak English quite well...I'm so used to older Russians who don't want to speak English at all...mostly my relatives.

You have such a story... Probably that was reall difficult for you to have curcumstances like that. Do you want to study russian by ypurself or that was a desigion made by your relatives?
I think that people first of all should've kinda desire to do something. There's no reason to study something you don't want to. Our life is too short to live it doing anything useless or unwanted.
Russian language...Hmm..Language is a strange thing and it was created for communication, think so, that's why it doesn't matter if your language perfect or not. The main thing is understanding. If i can understand you and you can understand me - then everything is ok.
It's great that you can speak russian even if you make some mistakes.
My english actually not that great, I make mistakes even in writing and do a lot of them in speaking. Also my vocabulary is so poor T_T I wish i could live somewhere for 1-2 years to study english properly x_x

And yes- a lot of russian on DA ask their friend to help with english))
Oh, sorry for a huge answer x_x

I was fine with learning Russian, but I didn't want to go to Russian school, where everyone was better than me. Most of the students there were Ukrainian or Serbian, so it was embarrassing that they were better! In the end, my teacher told my mother that there was no point (that's how bad I am!), but she still wants me to study it.
I suppose you're right about communication, most times I'm understood without the correct grammar. Sometimes when I'm talking to people I use a mix of Russian and German to get by when I don't know the vocabulary, and that seems to work.
Full immersion is probably the best way to learn a language, so like you said, going somewhere for a few years. Ironically my mother won't let me go to Russia. Where would you go?
I'm cluttering your comments now, Простите!

Ahahaw) You're not cluttering at all)) Noone usually write to me, so I'm really glad to chat with you from time to time) Hope I'm not annoying x_x
What kind of mother do u have -_-'.. What the point in studying russian if u won't visit the country? What for are all those problems?
I think you shouldn't care if another people in school are better than you. There always would be some people who are better than you - no matter what are you doing- language, drawing, cooking. I don't know the english proverb for russian phrase, but i hope u'll understand what i mean.
"People lay the egg they could to". That means everyone does as much as he can. I believe if u are trying hard and doing your best -then your results have no meaning at all. Just don't give a damn what another people think. There're a lot of people in the world and if you would care everytime what do they think of you - your life will be horrible.
What about me...I don't care where to go to - but i would like to have some friends there who will help m a little for the first time. that would be difficult to live somwhere far away from ur family ur country and not knowing the language properly.
Sorry for another huge answer -_-"

Yeah, no-one usually writes to me either. You're not annoying at all! This is your page, after all.
My mother used to work as an interpreter, so languages mean a lot to her. So even though she wanted me to speak Russian, she won't let me go to Russia (at least not on my own) and apparently I can't have a Russian boyfriend, either. I think she had some bad experiences there, but it's still not much of an excuse.
I knew I was the worst student in Russian school, so I didn't always go, but it doesn't worry me so much now. However in my normal school, the teachers knew I went to it, and so sometimes my history teacher would say something in Russian and that would really put me on the spot. He did that to another Russian girl sometimes too, and she couldn't really speak it either. He asked her once what "devotchka" meant, and she misheard him and said she didn't know, and felt really embarrassed.
A lot of the students I studied German with went on exchange there, and some were with families that only spoke limited English, and the students' German wasn't very good, but they got used to it. I think it helped that all the exchange students met up regularly. I once went to a school where a lot of the kids couldn't speak English, but they still turned up every day and somehow got through without despairing.
I was talking to someone else from Russia about studying in Australia, and how the Russian community isn't so big here any more. There are some Ukrainian ogranisations, but if someone came here without much English or friends and family, they would pretty much be lost. It's unfortunate, but fewer schools and universities are teaching Russian and Ukrainian these days. I think they even stopped teaching Hungarian this year. They're only interested in French, Chinese, and German.
