yeah, it's ok, just please don't change their nature too much, that the snake-pony is not evil, he is very friendly and kind, but sometimes the snake curse take the control of him making him act like a fierce predator, and the little demon is......quite childish, so sometimes he is good and sometimes he is evil, he only like to have fun, even without thinking to others.
about names, there is a problem with that, the little demon is called Nero, and the pony was called in the same way before be turned into a half snake, then he left his village, and from then, noone called him in any way different from monster, he start living in the forest near ponyvile and becomes like a story told at child to scare them, something like a boogeyman

I thought it was very hard too, but it isn't (this is my first game like that) there are only a couple of hard bosses, the rest of the game is easy......I'm playing an harder game on my 3ds......however I have almost all the trophies, so I want to take them all.
about inspiraton, the problem is that I don't have any favourite snake 
and I can't find a good snake in cartoons, because they usually never squeeze anyone, and a good snake have to be evil (very evil and cruel) and good at squeeze.

I need more games to play x3 I spend too much time on Steam, I have kinda ignored my 3DS for too long
I like pretty much any of them if used properly o: But your right, there isn't really much easy-to-find good content with them :c I wish there was more of Milotic and Dragonair than there is, them and Serperior might be my favorites :3c
I have to resort to comics and things for my fill but they are quite hard to find :c

for me it's very hard to find pics, find a comic is amolst impossible, I finded only one in 7 years on DA (that is also my favourite pics at all) or at least at the moment I can remember only one.......maybe I have some more.
I don't like serperior very much
I hope there will be a new good poison snake in the next pokemon games (maybe more then one) because best pokemons are poison, and better if they're snakes
