# About me

My general philosophies on what I do:

Cosplay: I do it for fun, and I love to have fun with it. I do the characters that appeal to me for whatever reason, without regards as to whether they are popular or not. I definitely don't take it seriously other than the fact that I won't wear something unless I'm committed to it and really like the character and the costume. I've met so many wonderful people through this hobby!

Photography: I'm really nothing more than a snapshot-taker. I think I have a decent eye for composition and viewpoint, but I consider myself completely ignorant of how to manipulate lighting and exposure. I rarely photoshop pictures unless it is to color-correct or repair dust, scratches, or minor edits.

Traditional Arts: I got fed up with 'formal' art instruction in high school and dropped art class completely. I didn't draw again until college, when I used it as a technique to stay awake in chemistry class. I've had no real training in drawing, and even less in painting, so anything I do is just sketched from photographs. I go through fits and starts - I haven't drawn in a few years since I have been more absorbed in cosplay instead, but I imagine that some day I'll wander back to it.

Current Residence: Massachusetts
Favourite style of art: Pre-raphaelite/realism, Art nouveau

Hello! I just want to say that I have finished my Kyoshi Warrior costume, but I have no idea on how to get the make up right. I can't seem to get a nice even cover (i'm using Merhon Starblend) with my white. Any advice? c:

Syagria In reply to Ghost-Apple [2012-07-24 03:55:35 +0000 UTC]

Sure! I used the exact same makeup. First, you'll need a large makeup brush that (1) you don't mind getting dirty, and (2) won't get used for anything else. If you use it on any other color makeup, it will show up on the white the next time you do the Kyoshi makeup, and it looks dingy or tinted (experience talking on that one... derp). If you can wash out a brush really thoroughly, it helps prevent that, but I'm lazy, so I just dedicate each brush to a color. I was using a largish round brush with bristles that ended in a very flat end - if you have something like the stipple brush or the powder brush here ([link] ) then that will do the job.

I work with the makeup wet - I use the lid of the makeup cake as a little water tray so I don't accidentally overload it with water using the faucet. Get the brush a little wet, and work the water into the makeup cake. You may have to do this a couple of times to work up a small section of the surface layer that is decently wet, but contains a high amount of pigment. Actually applying the makeup to my face I do very quickly, in fairly broad strokes, usually in about 2 layers. That's generally sufficient to do thorough coverage without leaving many bristle stroke marks behind. I try to avoid over-working the makeup, particularly once it starts drying, since that can start to pull pigment back into the brush and leaves behind blotchy places or brush stroke marks. I do my entire face in white, including a swipe across each eyelid, to create and even base under the red that I add later. If you wanted, you could slick your eyebrows down with wax, but I find makeup deals with this adequately on its own. The white coat should be fully dry in about 5-10 minutes; you could use a hairdryer to speed this up, but just be careful the heat doesn't cause you to sweat, since that will mix with the makeup if it is still wet, and could appear blotchy or runny. The first few times I did the makeup, I had a second cake of white Starblend that I had once dropped on the floor, causing the cake to turn into a bunch of crumbles and powder, and I used to do a dusting of dry white powder over my entire face. I did find, though, that it can cause some unevenness in the finish, so I've stopped doing this.

I then use a similar technique with red Starblend and a smaller detail brush for the eyes, and outline using black eyeliner (I've used both the kind that looks like a felt-tip pen, and a fine brush in a black liquid pain bottle - both worked, although the pen style tends to clog with red/white makeup sticking to the pen tip), and finally, do red lipstick and gloss. Most of the time, I set all the makeup by very lightly spraying myself in the face with hairspray (yeah, not kidding - I find Suave does a nice job; AquaNet looks shiny and plasticky). I don't use the setting spray/powder that Mehron sells - the spray is a pump action and is tough to get an even, non-drippy coat. Aersolized hair spray gives more even coverage. There have been times that I haven't done any kind of setting spray at all, and it still holds up well over the course of an entire day. Of course, you can't wipe, scratch, or touch your face or eyes, and you have to be very careful eating and drinking, but I was personally really pleased with how the makeup held up over 6-8 hours of con-wear.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This worked wonderfully for me today!
The make-up went on good, didn't itch too bad at all,
and stayed in place without a setting agent for about a good hour.
Thanks for all the advice, I can't wait to get results from the judging. c:
But I will definitely will try to use a setting agent in the future! c:

Are you going to Anime Boston this year? If so, do you have plans for the masq/hall contest yet? My friends and I may have a proposal for you...

Syagria In reply to gale583 [2012-01-20 16:44:24 +0000 UTC]

I am indeed! Most of the time, I don't participate in masq/hall; however, this year, I might have plans for the hall contest, but I need to find out if Avatar/Airbender costumes are permitted this year or not. With a new masq coordinator taking over, I haven't heard one way or another. What's your idea?
