I used to write shitty poetry. Now I don't write any poetry, because I never really got into it. But I do have a couple of pointers.

the writing workshop on DA should be helpful, too. as are prose-helper and poetry-helper

The best words of advice I can give are these that a college student studying writing told me: we think in simple emotions, but we don't read them simply.

Saying "I hate this" is weak. It's how we think, but the emotion doesn't carry into the reader. Describing the feeling of hate, the physical responses, etc. Describing the churning feeling, the flushed face, the disconnected tunnel vision associated with absolute seething hatred conveys the feeling better than the simple words "I hate this."

Also, never write about an emotion when you're feeling it, you want to write about it afterwards trying to recreate the feeling. When you're angry, anythign you write sounds angry to you, but when you read it later, it won't stir the same anger.
