My personal philosophy is that ponies are just another set of narrative tools; like hammers and guns, their "goodness" or "badness" depends on the people that use 'em. It's easy for ponies to become derivative and annoying, but the same can be said for Sonic, Pokemon, Harry Potter, and practically every other fandom. The trick is seeing that they don't HAVE to be that way.
I'm still working out the kinks in this personal line of thought, but I do want to get across just how passionate I am about the potential fan-art holds for artistic storytelling. We're living in very exciting times!

'Preciate that, man; I'm proud of that .gif myself, even though production took WAY too much time and energy for only two frames' worth of movement. I don't think I'll be repeating that sort of animation wizardry any time soon...
But yeah, I'm definitely aiming for diversity in this event. I've got tools and techniques that I've wanted to try for months, but drive and motivation tend to slip away right when I need 'em the most. Forcing myself into a strict art schedule seems to be my best solution, so amidst all those ponies, I'm desperately doing my best to experiment and prepare for the long-term demands of an artist.
In this particular event, I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with both effective and achievable ideas and subjects, which is why I admire your variations on cardboard-box apparel. It's so simple, but there are so many artistic opportunities when put in a setting as unique as MLP's! Be proud of that sort of versatility, bro; I think it'll get 'ya far in this community and beyond.

I hear you on the ideas->achievable part (so much more I wanted to do for Day 4...), and I'm using this event for pretty much the same reasons. For me, a doodly sketch is about as far as I get anymore before I "take a break" from the picture and leave it gathering dust on the side of my desk, so this has been a refreshing challenge to get each piece to a finished state. I might try to get in on the ATG Alumni group and at least put out a picture per week. I'm also using it as an excuse to expand beyond just figures in whitespace; perspective and backgrounds are what I need more work in right now.
Can't wait to see what you pull out of your hat for tomorrow. I liked the Final Fantasy theme you were going for this time.

I know you don't have the time anyway, but things have been getting difficult in drawthreads and the Drawfriend group, things ain't getting calm soon. So I warn you, let them do the harm to themselves, I'm trying not to intervene because even though I love drawthreads this is getting out of hand. Just saying, don't go there for now if you don't want to see how things are right now, this isn't pretty

If it's any comfort, I stumbled across the old FrogSoccer pages the drawthreads used to keep. Turns out the people who still use 'em are just as resigned as we are. I've only visited the page a few times, but if you need to get your Pokemon fix for the good of /vp/, I'd suggest takin' that route.
