Hello once again, its again a question about my goldfish. xD

Does goldfish loose their scales when they grow ? Because every single goldfish of mine are starting to loose their scales, is it a parasite ? D:

I figured that out, but it is that nitrite parasite ? I dont know how to treat that ono

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TessaAnka In reply to Framfus [2012-03-06 21:19:11 +0000 UTC]

Nitrite is a kind of toxic that only exists in dirty water. If the ammonia levels of the water is to high for a longer period of time it will turn into a nitrite poisoning that attacks the goldfishes red blood cells and slowly kills them, causing the goldfish to die a slow and painful death by suffocation as the blood cells no longer can transport any oxygen throughout their body. They will turn slightly brown and die. I keep telling you: CHANGE YOUR WATER REGULARLY! Then you wouldn't have all these problems and your pets wouldn't keep getting sick like this. I know you love them but you most start doing a proper job with them, otherwise they'll keep getting sick and suffer.

They don't lose scales from this kind of poisoning so it's most likely a skin parasite, they often get these when their immune system takes to much damage from living in dirty water for to long. They should have the correct meds at your local petstore, a med against skin parasites for coldwater fish. Do a complete water change, a 100% one, give them the medication and keep changing 25% of their water everyday for 2-3 weeks. Do a 50% water change once a week and continue to do the 50% water change once a week from now on. Do this and things will get better, they will live long happy lives and you get to love them for years. Good luck, your fishes are so beautiful and I wish you all the best.

I read somewhere that Nitrite poisoning attacks the skin and make open wounds on the fish, it was a picture of a REALLY harmed fish, it was a big open wound, and i have tried everything, aquarium salt, medicines, aquarsafe, different food, everything, the people at the petstore says that the water is fine! And i change about 30 % of the water every week, often more than that, and i did a 100% water change last week, my algea eater is not hurted by anything, doesn't loose skales, and is all healthy, but now one of my black moors stays bottom laying all day, i though he sleeped at the start, but then he started doing that at day, and i dont know what to do. :I

I'm so sorry, but then I don't know what else you can do. I feel horrible saying it but then it might be to late for them. If the medication and water changes/salt dosn't help I'm afraid you'll have to put them down.

foasdmfksd ohfojfsfdsfg but, but its only one of them, andand the other two is all healthy, but what can i do to put them down ?

TessaAnka In reply to Framfus [2012-03-08 12:57:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, it it's only one of them that's sick there really isn't any need to put any other fish down, just the sick one.

This will sound horrible, I know it dose and I'm sorry for it, but putting a fish down isn't pretty and feels horrible, but sometimes it's the best thing to do. A quick death rather then a long one, filled with pain and suffering.

It's hard to put a fish down in a humane way and it's something no one wants to do, I can assure you. The easiest ways to do it though is, if it's a small fish with thin skin, dropping it in boiling water. It dies within seconds. It takes longer if it's a goldfish though, since their skin is thicker, but it can still be done if the goldfish is small, then it will still die quickly and it's the easiest and quickest way to do it. If it's a big fish, or if you simply want to do it in a different way, you can eater snap it's neck with your hands or cut it of with a sharp knife. Some prefer to put the fish in a bag and hit it against something hard.

I've only used the boiling method, so I know it works and that it's quick, but people handle these kind of things differently so you should do it in a way that you can handle. Only, don't flush it down the toilet. It takes the fish hours to die, it's a horrible way to go and it's actually illegal in most countries.

I'm so sorry for being the one to tell you how to do this, I really am.

Oh, but i think i will wait a little, because he's ben kinda recovering, he swims around, and he eats again, so i will do a 50% water change when i get aquasafe ( im out of it ), and i will add a new doze of aquarium salt, but he is still bottom laying alot, but he reacts when i walk beside the aquarium, and he's trying to swim to me then. I just hope it doesn't spread. :I

Yeah, argh, it makes me depressed when people kill their fish, but its better than let it have pain. Once, my algea eater was stuck in a castle thing because it had fell over, and i couldn't get it out from there, then my friend came and got it out, he was really hurted, alot of scales had felt of, and his fins was destoried. My friend killed him with a sharp knife for me, because i couldn't.

Just a quick question - do you or have you ever kept a heater in your goldfish aquarium just to keep the water at a stable temperature? My new goldfish Peaches has quite a lot of damage to his fins due to all the travelling he has done and the stress he has gone through and I know they will get better now he is home and in a controlled environment and with nice clean water, but I was curious if keeping the temperature constant with a heater would also be beneficial? Unfortunately my tank is by a window (absolutely no where else for it to go) and with it still being the winter we have our heating on, so the house goes through quite a change in temperature and I thought maybe this could hinder the healing process? Thanks for any advice x

TessaAnka In reply to EmeraldRosepetal [2012-02-19 20:55:04 +0000 UTC]

I do keep a heater in my goldfish tank, it keeps a steady 18 Celsius even though it's placed in the middle of two huge windows. I think it helps quite a lot since it keeps the temp even at all times and since I put in the heater it has gotten easier to keep algae down to a minimum. If that's because of the heater of of it's caused by a series of other things I can't tell but in my experience a heater doesn't hurt.
