Despite the loathing and contempt most of the Reapers held for demons, their leader was of a different mind. It was her Darkness, the very thing of which she was created, that allowed her to see the intricacies that made up these hellions. She observed one such creature now, as a young girl sat alone in the yard of her school, seeming to be mumbling to herself; but Death knew better.
Her cohort was, although listening to the adolescent, was watching Diana just as keenly. Black orbs were unblinking as they sat lounged like a feline on a branch far above the girl's head, watching a moment longer before one finger twitched. Her own shadows vined down the trunk of the tree, crawling down until they were in reach of the demon; and thusly prodded at their "side". She was downright tickling the thing. Her expression was, however, unchanged as the shadow's red eyes crinkled, as though in laughter, and they even shook with it. Death was unworried; the demon might be in some form of contract, but the girl was not fated to die, and the Reaper doubted she would be able to see her as she currently was.
She had doubts on that idea when the younger looked up at her.

Elena's life wasn't exactly... needlessly complicated, but it was complicated. Shadow had told her many times of her bosses, and how they no doubt were well aware of the 'work' the two of them would do. She knew it was only a matter of time before one of these demonic bosses would decide to drop in, fill Elena with some sort of existential horror, and then leave her questioning her life choises.... or something.
She just hadn't expected that to happen today. She'd hoped that her casual chatting with her demon friend (whom was resting in the shade of the trees) was going to go on on its own until the end of lunch bell rang and she made her way to her next class. And then Shadow started....looking wierd. Their gaze was set somewhere in the distance, their inky black shoulders shaking little by little. Elena followed their line of sight and...
"Hello?" She called out, carefully standing up and brushing her skirt off. "Are you looking for something ma'am?"

Ah. She could see her. Figures.
Still unblinking and expressionless, Diana leveled the girl with her blackened eyes, the orbs bottomless pits of darkness that refused to hold any light. Until, finally, she blinked, her studies of the girl concluding before she slid from her perch to stand before the child, her towering figure hunching enough that she could speak more directly to the breathing girl now in front of her. At least this one had manners.
"Nothing of vital importance. Merely sating my curiosity," she answered, her words soft but her voice nonetheless all encompassing. Ever the raging storm, her voice was impossible to ignore no matter what tonality she held. Her gaze soon drifted down to the still giggling shadow, even though she had ceased her tickling.
"One so young to be contracted with such a creature is...unusual."

Elena raised a brow at the vaguely demonic woman before her. She looked...
well... like one would expect from a vaguely demonic person. All pale skin and dark
eyes. She knew that once she got closer Elena should have probably been more afraid,
or at least intimidated; after all the woman before her was clearly far more powerful
than Shadow could ever be. But all the same, Elena knew that the Fallen that they
would deal with were far less willing to make themselves look like anything but as
attractive as they can get to tempt people. So Elena was sure she was alright.
Especially granted how she was dealing with Shadow. Elena smiled lightly and gestured for
her demon friend to close back in, more so that they could face the woman together than
any sort of protection. "Well i wouldn't say contracted" she shrugged, making a
wiggly motion with her hand. "Shadow and I are buddies. I give her a place to hide and
a friend to help her hunt down Fallen, and she helps me out."
"Oh, also, I'm Elena. Elena Santiago. It's very nice to meet you ma'am."

"I know who you are, child," she hummed, her body moving as though being pulled by a string as she stood straight. Her image flickered as though she were stuck in a video glitch for a brief moment before she once more fixated to reality, only her visage had changed entirely. No longer standing as an adult woman to her full height, she was now no taller than the girl before her, although still exceptionally thin. It was simply another face she used, normally to help the souls of stubborn children move on. A small hand reached up to tuck her now incredibly long hair behind her ear, black orbs still settled on Elena.
"Elena Gutierrez-Santiago, born to Liliana and Guadalupe, blood type AB+....'friends' with the Sentry demon you have claimed as 'Shadow'," she paused, head tilting to the side, "your soul told me this. Tell me; do you not fear Death?"

Man... demons were so unpleasant to talk to sometimes... Like there was nothing wrong with them (most of the time) but there's just something viscerally horrifying about how they moved when they were trying to apprear human. She folded her arms, her purple sundress bunching up underneath the crossed limbs, not necessarily to appear stubborn or brave, but just to have something to do with her hands.
Her hazel eyes glimmered and she felt Shadow behind her. Shadow didn't fear this creature, and she handled her friend gently, but that didn't mean she wouldn't eventually rip her to shreds. "Well wouldn't my Soul answer that question for you?" she smiled slightly, an almost baiting grin. "I'm not sure how much I do or don't fear death, i tend to poke it with a stick a lot but i still fight for my life, so I'm not sure where that puts me. You probably asked me to see if I'd lie to you, yeah?"

A wry smirk tugged up the corners of her lips, and she shook her head, chuckling softly with the action.
"I read souls because it is my role. I cannot always discern emotions," she started, looking down at her fingers as she twiddled with a lock of her hair, twisting it around the tinier digits, "I ask because most feel the innate fear of me in their very souls as soon as they gaze upon me. It is instinct. You humans and your 'will to live', so to speak. This fear and desperation to cling to life is something I cannot see, so I ask if one fears Me," she paused, leveling the girl with her gaze again, "You need not be so suspicious of me, anyway. Your friend's instincts are working fine. It is not yet your time, so I will not be claiming your soul today," she paused again, far briefer than the last, as she whipped up her hand in a halting motion, her expression turning deadpanned, "please, do not ask when you will die. I may be Death, but no one is to know when they will die. I do not take kindly to those who wish to cheat me."

Elena pinched her lips to the side, hazel eyes narrowing in annoyance "Must immortals always speak in riddles?" She responded in exhasperation. "I'm not suspicious of you, I've dealt with a lot of demons and embodiments already and it's getting...ugh..." she shook her head and make a small wiggly gesture with her hand. "Frustrating, ya know? I'm a simple girl with simple desires and stuff, and you guys have a tendancy to always make things way more complicated than they need to be."
"I don't care about death dates and stuff, I'm going to die when my body can no longer stand the power Shadow channels through me, I've accepted that, but if you could stop treating me like a toddler for a moment and actually speak what you intend to I'd really appreciate it."

"A toddler? Are you not but a child? I watched this planet being formed, just as I have seen the creation of others thanks to my...brother. This planet itself is little more than a toddler to me," she scoffed, eyes narrowing.
"I speak not in riddles, child. You are clever, but still learning. Have I not given you enough hints already? Or must I state clear as day that I am Death. It is likely why your companion does not fear me. We were both created from darkness. Stop being rude and belittling me to that of some pathetic demon. They could never hold a candle to the destruction I have wrought, and are nothing more than soul stealers."

"So, you're Faust's assistant, hm?" Ada stares up at the other, tilting her head slightly to the side before giving a disproving click of her tongue. "How can you be his assistant? You're so skinny! Can you even lift those tiny glass bottles he's always using? How unhealthy!"

Nicholette was just a touch too surprised to speak for a long moment. Dark eyed widening as the elderly faceless woman approached her. True she was small. practically skin and bone in many a way, but it had never really been much of a problem. "Uhm.... Ma'am? I can assure you, my strength isn't an issue?" Normally she would tak offense, but she was just a little too confused. "But uhm... might I ask who you are? I'm not exactly used to strangers calling me too skinny, or knowing of both me and Boss."

At the question, Ada huffed, tapping her finger on her cane. "Well, of course I know about you! You work for my little baby!" Her vexed frown then turned into a smile as she snickered. Readjusting her rather large bag on her arm, she commented, "Oh, whenever he comes visit me I ask him about his work and your name has come up quite a few times, I just had to meet you!" Ada assumed Faust must have talked about her since, well, she's Grandma! Why wouldn't he talk about her? At least, that's what made sense in her mind, so she couldn't help but be a bit confused and disappointed that the other didn't realize who she was.

Oh... Oh! So that's who she was! Boss' grandmother! She forgot sometimes that He was better at concealing his reputation than she was. That he had the ability to have a relationship with his family. "Oh jeez! I'm sorry ma'am! I just didn't know you were the legendary 'Granny'!" she she quickly reached out to shake the elderly woman's hand. Of course she'd heard stories about most of Faust's family, 'Granny' included. "he's told me a lot of stories while we're working... Sometimes I think he doesn't think I'm listening, but I always am." She laughed slightly and reached her free hand back to rub at the back of her head slightly.

Ah, there's the recognition she was looking for! Grinning wide, she reached out to shake hands with the other. Despite Ada's frail body, she still had a rather firm and strong handshake. She always made sure to have one; first impressions were very important, after all, and a handshake was a big part of that. The fact the other actually reached out for a handshake was a good sign to her.
"Yes, yes, I'm sure they're all good stories, right?" Probably not, but with old age comes delusions apparently. Ada squeezed Nicholette's hand a bit, before giving a small pout. "Tsk, does that boy not pay you enough? Would you like me to make you some food? Grandma always has a lot of food to offer!"

Nicholette had a pretty firm grip herself, maybe not a perfect match with the older woman, but she wasn't flimsy. She was sure that her natural scrawny bone structure would run her into trouble one day, but she'd always thought that that was more along the lines of a bone or two breaking in an experiment, not her boss' grandmother wondering if she was malnourished!
"Yeah, most of them are!" It wasn't too much of a lie. Sure not all the stories they'd shared between them were of happy memories, but Faust always tried to mix the good witht he bad. "No thank you ma'am. I can assure you that Boss pays me just fine. I'm just... kinda naturally skinny." she gripped at her own wrist with her other hand, feeling the bone meeting into joints. "I'm not malnourished, don't you worry."

grannynorth In reply to TheCleverCoward [2016-10-09 20:24:13 +0000 UTC]
"Naturally skinny?" she echoed back, before shaking her head. "No such thing! You need to put some meat on those bones before you snap in two!" It was in this old faceless's nature to act like a grandmother to practically everyone, despite their age. So, readjusting her glasses - which looked rather strange on her, considering to most she seemed to lack eyes - she demanded, "Tell me, deary, what your favorite dessert is. I'll send plenty over to Faust to give to you!"
Okay, so maybe she wasn't the healthiest person herself, considering she usually only baked rather than give out real meals. In her defense, though, baking was simply more fun. Of course she knew how to make plenty of things, including actual meals, but whenever Ada had free time, she most likely was baking. Usually pie. Ada likes pie.
"Oh, and don't worry, deary, I'll make sure that boy doesn't eat anything I make for you. Gosh, he can never have enough of my cooking, it's surprising he isn't obese!"

needless to say, Nicholette was a little taken aback by such an exclamation. She really was just naturally like this; her metabolism as ridiculous and frankly she'd gotten used to it. For a moment she'd been about to argue with her Boss' grandmother, before remembering in a flash that she was as much of North as Boss was. Stubborn to the very end.
"I like baklava." she conceded with a small sigh. "Or just anything with honey in it." though the idea of Boss getting so full off of his Grandmother's cooking he got fat was an amusing image to consider, she knew the two of them got way too much work done for it to be possible. "Well we lug around machinery and projects all the time, that probably burns some calories..." she shrugged and smiled slightly. "But really you don't have to, believe me, I'm always gonna be like this."

Ada hummed in understanding. Being as old as she was, of course her memory wouldn't be the best. When it came to food, though, Ada always would remember. Hell, sometimes she would remember recipes better than she remembered her own children!
"Honey?" she voiced back, before mumbling under her breath, "I'm going to need more honey then, hm? Oh, while I'm at it, I should also pick up some more chocolate..." She seemed to tune out Nicholette for a moment as she formulated her mental grocery list. It's a wonder how she had so much money to get so many ingredients constantly, considering she was almost always making some sort of bake good to give to her babies daily. Then, looking back to the other, she tilted her head slightly to the side as she inquired, "But that would mean you two still get plenty of rest, right?" She was well aware of Pat's horrible sleeping schedule, so hoped Faust wasn't like his sister in that sense.

Nicholette's main job more or less was to help Faust, to... take care of him in a way. And while she'd hard stories about his Little Sister and her apparent inability to wrangle in the Prime minister, she personally was just intimidating enough to keep the two of them on a regular schedule. At least... granted if she wasn't lost in work herself. but all the same she nodded seriously at Ada North.
"I'll do my best Ma'am." and she couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at how quickly the elderly woman plotted out the best way to go about treats. She wasn't too sure still, why she was so intent on sending her and Faust some sweets, but she'd appreciate them when they arrived. "And ah.... thank you very much... for the offer that is."

"Good, good," she nodded in approval, adjusting her bag yet again to make sure it stayed on her shoulder. "That eases some of the worries off my back, then! Now I just need to try and beat some sense into that stupid rabbit..." She couldn't help but tsk at the end. More often than not, whenever Pat came to visit and Ada asked about her boss, Pat would stiffen and avoid the topic. Sometimes she would be honest and complain a bit, but that was rarely. But Ada could see right through her kids, Pat being no exception.
At the thanks, Ada gave a sweet smile, reaching over to pat Nicholette on the arm (she would have done the shoulder, but goodness this girl is so tall compared to her!) and replied, "Of course! No need to thank Grandma! If you ever need something or are ever hungry, you are always welcome to stop by my house and ask!" Seriously. Ada needs more children to take care of. She'd welcome anyone or anything.... as long as it's not one of those sorry disgraces, that is.

Quite frankly the idea of the little old lady 'beating some sense' into the Prime minister was incredibly amusing. She allowed herself a quick mental image of the little old lady chasing the rabbit around the castle, swatting him over the head with her cane and smiled just a bit wider, suppressing her laughter. She'd like to see something like that one day.
She nodded gratefully at her offer. Hands slightly folding in, holding herself just a touch smaller. "Alright Ma'am. I ah.... I'll keep that in mind. and ah..." She chuckled "I might take you up on that if Boss ever gets unruly for some reason."

She let out a small gasp, then pouted, "My, he hasn't done anything unruly before, has he?" Ada placed a hand on her hip, shaking her head in disappointment. "Goodness, he always was one of the little troublemakers in the family. I've had to tie him to a tree and leave him there for a day at times just to make him behave." Okay, so maybe Ada didn't always have the best solutions to solving problems, and would discipline her children in rather unique ways, but hey, more often than not it worked! Besides, it's not like she ever actually left them alone, she always sat out there with them. Initially she would try tying them to chairs, but they kept tipping the chair after moving around so much, so ha! Have fun trying to tip a tree with all that squirming!
"Oh, but I wouldn't advise you to tie him to a tree yourself, though," she added, tapping her chin as she thought aloud, "Goodness, he was such a biter."

"Nah nothing much." Nicholette assured with a slight laugh. "At least nothing I can't handle. He's just stubborn and wants to keep doing his experiments all night." she waved the notion off quickly enough remembering a few of the more... interesting fights between the two of them. She was really strong for her size wasn't she? She hadn't heard many of the Tree Stories from Faust, but she'd heard enough to send a spike of sympathy through her veins at the reference to it.
"Oh I'm not sure of it would be that bad. And... ah.. believe me... I know about the biting." Not that she was going to say the reason of that infront of her boss' grandmother of course! But since Ada brought it up Nicholette could respond.

"Goodness, has he bit you?" Ada gasped, and if only the other could see the old lady's eyes, she would see them widen in both horror and disappointment. To Ada, it was one thing to do something ill mannered around her since, well, she practically helped raise him! Of course she was going to know of how immature and horrible he was! But, to act in such a way towards others? What kind of reputation is he leaving for the North family?
Her shocked expression turned into a rather annoyed pout, commenting, "Oh, what an ill mannered child! He should know better than to do anything so rude! No wonder Johnathan acts the way he does." As if Ada didn't have enough problems trying to make Johnny behave, she was going to have to have a talk with Faust.

"I totally asked for it, it's not a problem." she rubbed the back of her neck slightly, suddenly a touch flustered. it was only lying to an grandmotherly like person that could ever put a hole in Nicholette Dawson's calm demeanor

Ada still didn't seem at that pleased. If anything, she seemed even more vexed by her grandchild. How poorly mannered to bite his assistant. That's his help! What if she were to get fed up with him and leave? Granted, she couldn't really, seeing as it is her role to help him and all, but that didn't mean Nicholette couldn't make some sort of "accident" happen that'd get him killed if he pissed her off just right.
After a moment, she gave a small sigh then a small smile. "Ah, I suppose he really is just a handful of a child, no matter how old he gets. Shame, he's never going to find anyone like that, though! And I'm not getting any younger, I expect great grandchildren soon!"

It ah... oh dear she'd just dug a hole for her boss hadn't she? That would be.... bad. She could just imagine the passive aggressive revenge he'd give her after his next visit to his grandma. That would... that would be bad. If they only started an entire prank war and petty revenge scheme on eachother after this she'd be surprised.
Of course that line of thought was immediately halted at the reference the old woman made of great-grandchildren. Now, obviously, the old woman didn't know about hers and Faust's ..... relationship. but it wasn't like they were exclusive. technically they could call it of at any time if either had an actual relationship. that just... didn't seem likely at the moment. "I'll ah.... I'll keep my eye out Ma'am." She responded, It was weird, she felt.... just a little bit sad at the idea of her Boss with a Girlfriend. Eh, whatever.
