"Agriculture was an economic sector hit particularly hard by the depression. Farm prices plummeted in reaction to the stock market crash. Farmers had huge surpluses, but consumers could not afford to buy their crops. The drop in farm income meant that many farmers could no longer meet mortgage payments, and they watched helplessly as their homes and farms were foreclosed and auctioned off. Compounding farming even more difficult."
