It's like college but exactly not for your specific field of study. 

Instead it offers 'open enrollment' and mostly classes on basic studies (like science, math, allot of the same guff they teach you in HS) and is usually done for about 2 years and results in you obtaining your associates degree. Often times those who wish for a bachelors transfer to a four-year institution  after completion of Community College. For many, this is usually a better (or at least preferred) method than going straight into a university.

Well if you're already entering a four-year institution then yeah, not needed. CC is just good for financial efficiency and ability to transfer afterwards.
