I use a phone camera and I own a really nice camera at home too.

That is really awesome! Then you have a lot of options. I suggest reading up on techniques and then going out there and practice, practice, practice. I got to the point where the next step cameras were really expensive, so I stuck with my phone camera. I think you can do an awesome job!

That will definitely help. I have taken classes and am not 100% self-taught. The classes will help you learn how to best use your camera. Then you are off and running. Once you have your equipment down, your only limit is where you can go to take photos.
