Thank you! It's interesting to see all the changes that have been made since I was last here.

Oh - and welcome to too. : )
I'm assumed, since you requested to join as a resident artist, that you live in AK as well. What area? (I don't mean to pry and am not asking for specifics LOL) I'm in South Central, as is Lisa, the founder of our group, and a few other members. We pretty much have resident members in each geographical area of the state though!

Hello! Thanks for letting me in I'm not really sure how I even found the group, but I was like "oh hey I'm an Alaskan too and really like this stuff." I live in Ketchikan, have my entire life, and I take pictures around town, but not too often anymore. My camera is only ten megapixels at the moment but better than nothing.

Pshh. Some of my best photos were taken with a camera with only 4. That's no excuse - it's digital, so you can shoot to your hearts content!
The best investment you could make if you want to take great photos with a digital camera, is a decent tripod. Walmart sells a decent little lightweight portable tripod, for around $20 and it's nice for a little while, but you'd soon want to upgrade both for durability, and ease of use. There are even cheaper tripods out there, but you get what you pay for. You can get a really nice one for around $60, just realize that it won't hold up to the abuse of being hauled around forever. Mine only lasted two years - but then I took it on hunting trips, packed on a 4 -wheeler, over horribly rough trails. I'm hesitant to spend much more on one, merely because the abuse I subject them to isn't really "normal" and I'd hate to destroy a $100 tripod on it's first hunting trip...
As far as your camera being capable of capturing nice shots, it just takes some experience with it. You'll have to experiment with your settings until you find what works best for you in each situation. White balance is one of the things new photographers overlook that can make or break a photo.
Read your owners manual, and if you don't have one, visit the manufacturers website and find one - it should be a free download. (I haven't come across one that wasn't, yet).
