I dunno though. My 8 year old nephew has a 1st level mage as a retainer character (the girly-looking, lilac-haired dude I used to have as my avatar), and he survived the first adventure and I didn't even need to cheat for him. I dunno, I think 2nd ed mages aren't too bad.
