I love the fatnasy genre. I have two requirments for books I read
1. Must have magic
2. Must not have a "secret fantasy world" plot in which normal people don't know that magic exists.
If you know any good books like that, tell me! :) Bonus points if the books have multiple sentient species. Three bonus points for elves. I can give you a bunch of my favorites as well.

Not that I'm particularly good at it, but I like to do some quick sketches from time to time.
Writing
Well, you want to know about this hobby, just read The Necromancer Prophecy or The Conjuring.

And thanks, I actually needed a second person to verify. I've been trying to figure out what time zone dev operates in. You arrived at the same conclusion the other person did, 10:15, so dev time is in the -8 time zone with me.
...Or at least, that is what I would think, if the time hadn't changed itself to 9:15 on my screen. That's weird. I know it used to say ten.
Well that just opens up more questions. Ummm... What time zone are you in? I wonder if your time zone effects the time it shows

If you're 1 hour before me at 10:15 to my (apparently) 9:15, you should be at -7 to my -8 time zone. What does confuse me is why the second person would se the same time you did, since they go by hong kong time... Ahah! They are a day ahead... sooo.... They saw your time but at an am time on the next day. I think. Okay, either way this means that dev time does in fact change with a person's time zone. Mystery solved. XD

Amusingly enough, I already saw that because of my watch on a group caled "the elven realm," perhaps that's where you found him as well. And you're right, much, much softer features, but otherwise I see the resemblance.

Ehh, my friends and I played by house rules, and I honestly don't like the original rules as much, so going to tourneys doesn't really work.
All my friends just don't have the patience for strategy.

Have you ever tried Mercedes Lackey?
If you like Magic and Elves I would recommend the following:
the Obsidian mountain Trilogy that she srote with James Mallory.
The Outstreched Shadow
To light a candle
When Darkness falls
The 1000 years later you have the Enduring Flame Trilogy:
The Phoenix Unchained
The Phoenix Endangered
The Phoenix Transformed
You have:
Elves a plenty, Dragons, Dark elves, 2 ways of Magic, huge battles, the Endarkened, the humans, the centaures, and so many other sentient weird beings that I cannot count them all.
In a different world that only she has created you can go for the Heralds of Valdemar.
You have several contries, some use mind magic, some use normal magic, various intelligent beings, like Griffons, Tervardi, Dihely, the Companions of course, and others, but it depends which country you are in.
No elves in these worlds though something close in Spirit to them even though they are human they are called the Hawk brothers
For a first read I would recommend:
The mage wars trilogy:
The Black Griffon
The White Griffon
The silver Griffon
For the feel of the main country around what her world is based I would propose:
Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy:
Arrows of the Queen
Arrow's Flight
Arrow's Fall
If you star with these, you have a good overview of her universe
I hope this puts you on a new road of discovery.

My personal favorite series is the dragonlance chronicles, a heavy influene on my work. It starts with these three, written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragons of Spring Dawning
And from there there are about 50 more. The dozens by Weis and Hickman are the best though. :3
But be warned, these are the pinnacle of fantasy geekdom. They're even based on D&D.

As for Mercedes Lackey or Misty as she likes to be called as well, she has written over 50 books, so you have plenty of universes to discover.
