Well, it really does just boil down to practice. A lot of practice. Use reference and try new things and draw what makes you happy and draw as often as possible. The more you do it, the better you get and the more naturally it comes to you.

One thing I recommend to avoid is shading and highlighting with black and white, as it can really drain the life from your piece. Especially if you're working with bright, vibrant colours. I mean, it depends on your own style and preferences, but that's something that really made a huge difference for me. The undo button is your best friend. If you're ever super unsure about a really big change, duplicate the layer so that you still have the original, just in case the change doesn't work out like you hoped. Keeping everything (each base colour, shadows, highlights, tattoos or textures, etc) on a separate layer can also be really useful, just make sure they're labeled so you don't get lost.

I'm not a professional by any means, and most of this was figured out over the years by observing how other people did things and experimenting until I found something I liked for myself. I'd honestly just recommend you try the same. Experiment, see what other people make, and Frankenstein it all together to make a technique that works for you.
