Nice to meet a fellow Hanna-Barbera fan! The Banana Splits were probably my introduction to H-B if it wasnβt The Flintstones or Yogi Bear. Though I have more memories of watching the Splits every Sunday afternoon over a roast lunch with my parents, younger brother and grandfather, so they had the biggest impact on me over the years. (Theyβre also something I can chat with my Dad about since he grew up watching them in the 60s and 70s, so when I have my DVD going, he usually has his own commentary.)

I know that you would think NGE is darker. But this older series is way too darker than the successor.
Space Runaway Ideon is Killβem All Tomino and predecessor of NGE.Β
Itβs supposedly to be 43 eps but only 39 and 4 episode never aired due to low rating or too much death.
Which led fandom of Ideon demanding releasing 4 episode. And 2 years later. They released two movie. Contact and Be Invoked.
Contact - Recap of 39 episode with new footages, and some part was cut to alternate the series.
Be Invoked - Combining with all four episodes that never aired and become epic conclusions of the Ideon.
I recommend you should watch it because I have place the link.

Thanks for the recommendation, but if I can rarely handle NGE these days (instead I stick to fan stuff and maybe movies upon release) I doubt I can handle something that dark, yikes! Having episodes pulled for being too extreme, that is a definite sign it might be a bit much for me these days.

Ideon is created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The guy created the Gundam Franchise and have been called by many fan, "Killβem All Tomino". Due to the fact that the whole cast of got killed in every anime directed by him like:
Zambot 3, Mobile Suit Gundam (literally the whole franchise! Universal Century and beyond timeline in every series.), Space Runaway Ideon, and Aura Battler Dunbine.
Many supporting characters got killed and even main protagonist.
