Have you seen the first episode Magic Kaito 1412 yet?

TrinityScholar217 In reply to TeamTakagi [2014-10-13 16:31:51 +0000 UTC]
Yes!Β
I thought it was great on many levels, although it was almost identical to the Kaito Kid OVA special.Β
Was pleasantly surprised to hear that Kaito's father and Nakamori's voice haven't changed.Β

Yeah. Of course they were both based on the first MK manga, so I could see how they were almost identical.
I think my only peeve was the placement of Kaito's arms before he reveals his upside down trick; the manga & ova had them tucked behind his head like his knees are when the trick is revealed whereas the new episode had them down tucked in his pant pockets. Then suddenly when it's revealed, his knees are tucked behind his head. Rather minor.
Me too! I was braced for the change, but I fan-girled when they stayed the same.

I loved the subtle reference to Dr. Agasa.
Yeah, I heard that some of the episodes are Kaitou Kid cases that were featured in Detective Conan, but are from Kaitou Kid's point of view.

TrinityScholar217 In reply to TeamTakagi [2014-10-16 03:49:15 +0000 UTC]
That will be a very interesting interpretation of events.Β
I really enjoyed the reference too, but wondered if that Agasa is aiding Kaito Kid? Unless he doesn't know his inventions are made for that purpose.
Start Rant: Also you'd think if Agasa could make such wonderful inventions, he'd be able to finally achieve his dreams of creating an invention that would make him famous/rich, although his character seems to have deviated away from that goal, and he seems more like the mature supporter than the whacky professor type :End Rant

TeamTakagi In reply to TrinityScholar217 [2014-10-16 05:28:19 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, it's possible that Jii told Agasa that he needed those items for a party, or maybe even a magic trick with a Kaitou Kid impersonator. If Agasa and Jii were friends, Agasa would probably make the items, no questions asked. Jii could have also hinted that maybe he'd send other magicians Agaga's way if the items worked. I don't know, but that's my theory anyway.
I can't remember where I read it somewhere, but apparently it's a running gag that Agasa's inventions are always wonderful for Conan and the gang, but that the ones that he tries to market are usually a bit dorky (I think there was one episode where he was trying to sell a hot springs thermometer or something?).Β But he's gotten recognition for his inventions before; for example, he invents the rainbow bomb for the art museum when Sato gets handcuffed to the criminal. And something of his must be selling, since he apparently doesn't have any other income, but he can afford the house and pay the bills.

I think the way they did Kaito and Hakuba's first meeting Β was better than the special. I like how the episodes spend more time on character interactions, which makes you invested. I recall that most of the specials focused mostly on heists.Β
Interesting how they chose to introduce him first rather than Akako though it doesn't have a tremendous impact on the story.Β
I wasn't crazy about Hakuba's mention of the year. It's kind of weird that they chose to set it in 2015, and kinda breaks the continuity of the Detective Conan universe (especially since Shinichi shrunk yet). It's unavoidable for how long its been around, and I suppose most people wouldn't really case.Β
Just two more weeks away until Kaito Kid vs. Shinichi!!! I'm pumped!

TeamTakagi In reply to TrinityScholar217 [2014-10-29 04:08:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Magic Kaitou 1412 combined the two manga chapters that introduce Hakuba and did the intro more like the manga, while the special has the heist start immediately, and then does a flashback to introduce Hakuba. (Glad that they got rid of the Sherlock Holmes trench coat and hat too).
Another thing I noticed with the art is that the specials copy the exaggerated huge eye expressions from the manga whenever the characters freak out, but MK 1412 doesn't.
I noticed that they're doing more character interactions as well, which is nice.
I kind of like that they introduce Hakuba first, personally. Kaitou Kid really needs a detective to match wits with him, and Akako isn't my favorite rival.
I guess since it's so close to the end of 2014, they wanted it to be more current? Yeah, it kind of breaks the timing of DC, although DC's timeline is kind of screwy anyway, since it supposedly hasn't been a year since Shinichi shrunk, but technology and holidays have gone forward.
My issue with naming the year is that it's going to be outdated in about a year, which always bugs me whenever I watch older movies or TV shows.
Me too, especially since the same actor can play both Shinichi and Kaito.

That's true, it does a sense of timelessness because of that.
I'm not a fan of Akako's character. Her motivation is shallow, plus the idea of magic is pushing the limit the universe tries so often to instill (as Conan and Mouri have said on occasion that if magic existed there would be no need for detectives). With that said, her initial appearance predates the series. She was also never fully developed, but that can be said for many of Magic Kaito's roster since Aoyama only wrote about 30 chapters. I'm curious if the show will return for a second season given season 1 will have 24 episodes. They could create a number of "anime only" episodes; they've got the material to work with, but that's all they could do, meaning there's no way Kaito Kid will find the Pandora gem in this series.Β
I did really like the original Spider storyline in the specials. Although using a bobby pin as a weapon is as lame as using a fork (KHR reference)
And I would image that any Detective Conan characters featured on the series would use their respected voice actors. Also, because MK1412 is produced by a different studio than DC, they could technically contract the original voice of Kogoro should the character appear since his falling out was with DC's producers.Β
Just wishful thinking, but wouldn't that be awesome! Β

TeamTakagi In reply to TrinityScholar217 [2014-11-01 06:05:09 +0000 UTC]
It's an interesting concept that a "real" magician -- someone who calls on magic -- would meet up against Kid, who's a magician -- creates illusions. I'm not a big fan of her motive either.
Perhaps they're seeing how well MK does before they contract for another season, or maybe it's a one-time deal. I did notice that they seem to communicate with Mr. Aoyama since they alluded to the shadowy figure in Episode 1 that appears in the latest manga file, so maybe they could do anime-only episodes using information he provides? Just speculation on my part.
I liked Spider also; he was a very interesting villain.
I hope they use the respective voice actors. I think it also depends on the actors' schedules and contracts. I did notice that they used Conan's original voice actor in the 30 second tv ad.
I miss the old Kogoro too, although the new one is doing well.

They finally uploaded a subbed version of episode 6.Β
Overall, it was a fantastic episode. I was uncontrollably thrilled when Shinichi took off his helmet and revealed himself. I liked how it reminded me how more ruthless his personality was before he turned into Conan. Would've liked to see more of Kaito's perspective, but I guess that just went for a clean manga adaptation.Β
Oh, and that scene where Akako almost used her magic....I was not feeling it.Β
So because of the show's episode order and since it's so early, I interpreted this episode as a flash forward rather than a flashback. The main episode with the clock tower would be what is happening presently in the show, and the very beginning and ending are in the future. Sorry if this sounds confusing, hope you get what I mean.Β The other reason I thought this is because this week's episode is not Conan vs. Kaito Kid's first showdown, so I thought maybe they were saving it for the season finale, which I would just love.Β
That said, the titles of the next few episodes were announced, one of which is titled Ryoma, and many people believe this will be an adaptation of Detective Conan episode 627-628 "Conan & Kid's Battle For Ryoma's Treasure." However, that is incredibly far in the timeline that I can't imagine why they would do that, especially if they want to make the show stand on its own. I think that it might be about the heist where the Phantom Lady (Kaito's mom) takes Ryoma'sΒ treasure.Β

I enjoyed this week's episode as well; I couldn't wait for the translators to upload the English sub.
I agree with you about Akako. I felt that panning back to her slowed down the momentum of the confrontation between KID and Shinichi, although I could see why they included it, since it was in the original manga. (The DC adaptation removed it, but later added the scene when they were working on the Magic Kaito specials).
I think maybe Aoyama was trying to show that Shinichi is a far more intimidating and dangerous opponent than Hakuba, but the timing was weird.
Yeah, I was a bit confused about when this took place since the next show is Kaito's Busy Sunday (and a bit disappointed since I really want to see Kid's POV in the Conan-KID confrontation). Your theory makes sense as a flash forward.
I hope we get to see Phantom Lady in action.

There is potential evidence that the Conan vs. Kid episode will happen. Many of the sequences in the intro makes references to its episodes. For example, I was confused why Kid was playing pool until episode 3. The scene when he falls from the sky is a direct reference to his first appearance in Detective Conan. This could more than just a homage.

Yeah, and the fact that they had Conan speaking in the first trailers that came out is a pretty good indication as well.

Why does Kaito already know Conan in the preview??? This is confusing for viewers who aren't familiar with Detective Conan. It also limits the series length, because the events of the next episode are supposed to be well into Kaito Kid's career!!! Ahhh, A1 is really screwing around with continuity so drastically.Β

This episode played out exactly how I thought a Conan episode from Kaito's perspective would look like. This would technically be the first episode that is an anime "original". While some details from the Conan version were changed, when I re-watched it, Conan and Kaito share many of the same thoughts about what occurs, which I think is paying great attention to detail.Β
Again, I feel like this would've been best saved for a later time. They treat Conan's presence too passively without making any reference or aside to who he is or when the two met.Β A lot of people commented on the stream of Kaito Kid I watch that they were confused why Conan was there, and if he had any prior connection with Kaito Kid or was just famous enough to have a crossover. Though as you said, DC is huge in Japan and this Anime created for a Japanese audience. There is a greater chance international audiences watching 1412 on the internet (TV if they live in Italy) aren't well informed about DC.
How did you like it?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
TeamTakagi In reply to TrinityScholar217 [2014-12-07 23:03:37 +0000 UTC]
I really liked it; I always wondered how Kaito planned and did his heists. It was also great seeing Conan from an outsider's point of view.
I suppose this could be considered a "teaser" for building up to Conan and Kid's first confrontation (not counting Shinichi's intervention at the clock tower). At this point, Conan is just another detective that Kid's got to outsmart.
I'm guessing that Kaito is going to flashback at some point to that rooftop, similar to when he remembered with the clock tower.
Yeah, most people don't know about DC due to the title name change and that it didn't have a good air time. (I heard it was some random time when hardly anyone watched it). Also didn't help that Funimation's advertising for it makes it sound like a hokey kid's show.
*rubs hands evilly* At least now more people are hearing about Detective Conan thanks to this.
