"Sometimes the best course of action is to step away and come back once a lot more of the story has progressed. It does make it harder when you get frustrated with a part in a story and can't read further on to see how things change and get better - characters just had to go through some growth (inner, and I guess in this case outer too) within the story to reach their potential for redeeming arcs later on."

Of course, you are right. I do that to in my story, having shock moments. I will wait until it is further along the way and see the big picture unfold. I wonder in the ending who will have the strongest bonds.
