Hey, much thanks for the devwatch!
I got around to painting the dragon head [link] but can't manage to take a good picture of it. The camera is making it appear too bright.
Of course, I also just saw [link] up on the DA list, and cannot even compare to the quality of that dragon head.

I know! I was just amazed at that sculpture, I just have to keep looking forward to the day when I get that good
As for your dragon, it's way past what I can do, I think you may be closer to that DA list dragon than you think
I kinda want to try my hand at actual sculpting but I'm horrible at painting and I'm afraid of doing all that work just to be ruined by a paint job.
As for your camera, I'm not sure how to make that work any better, maybe play with the lighting? I've heard you're not supposed to use the flash.
Sorry I can't be of more help!

Well, if you do make a sculpture that you really like, and you're afraid of putting a bad paintjob on it, I would recommend making a mold of it. That way you have one copy of it to experiment on with paint, and another one to do when you feel comfortable.
Another thing I recommend would be to make some assorted pieces of sculpey with different shapes and textures and practice painting on them. That way you can get an idea of how the paint will look and behave in certain areas without needing to practice directly on your sculpture.
I didn't do either of those things since it was 3am and I was slightly drunk when I remembered that I already had paints that were all lonely on the bottom shelf. I am so very lucky that the paint didn't completely erase the scale texture. I would have deserved it.

What kind of paints do you use?
I had a couple of acrylic kinds I've used but they dry a bit sticky so I'm looking for a new brand.

Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic Artist Color. I've just got this little "Classic Beginner" 6pack.
I wouldn't say it's sticky, but there's a definite "rubbery" texture going on. Not enough to actually make anything adhere to it, but enough to grip my fingers. I suppose that might be a good thing for miniature sculptures, so you don't drop them.
Amarulath was actually the first thing I painted with them, and the first thing I'd painted since highschool which was...four and a half years ago. I feel old.
