I use Old Holland classic, but the primaries alone cost more than $100.00

That's:
Old Holland Bright red
Old Holland Blue
Cadmium Yellow Lemon

Titanium white is essintial

that's expensive... maybe i'll find something a bit cheaper. i have the money, but i'm also not of your caliber, i don't wanna spend all that and then suck lol

Vasqi In reply to PosauneSpieler [2009-09-08 11:31:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's how I felt early on. But I discovered that the quality of the paint makes it easier to work with. You can't do glazing with the lowed grade paints because they have too much oil in them and not enough pigment. The result is that the preliminary layers are already fat, so there's little or no tooth remaining for subsequent coats.

In English, that means: when you try to brush on a new stroke of paint, the existing painting surface is too smooth to pull the paint from the brush, which has thick paint clinging to it's fibrous bristles.

Also, the above delima results in a second problem. That the painter learns to develop techniques based upon the requirements of their materials.

Translation: the method you learn by using the inferior quality works will not work with the high quality materials. This means that you will NEVER be able to make the switch, even after your skills improve.

Consequently, the first thing you learn when working with high quality (more expensive) materials is, don't be wasteful. If you know what colours you need for the composition, then strive to mix just enough for that. Once the paint comes out of the tube, it doesn't go back in! I normally only squeeze out 1/4" to 1/2" at a time. If I run out, I just put some more of the same lil' amount. The objective is to end up throwing away as little as possible. There are also other things you can do, like use the leftover paint as a base on a new canvas to set a neutral tone for your next painting... but these tend to lean into green.

After you've learned to put very lil' paint on your palette ( you don't need a large palette, trust me, I have several which I don't use...) now you need to learn to mix your colours with very small amounts. This would be easier for me to teach you in person. This is the part that is a bit more complex and involved which I need to think how to word clearly and put in an email. Bottom line, each brand of paint mixes differently. That's also why I pick one brand and very specific colours and stick with them. If you do as I suggested and stick with just Primaries and Whites, you'll be way ahead of your peers.

After that comes knowledge of drying times and mediums. This shit is never ending. You spend your whole life learning it and starving to death.

I think I might get back riding again next week. There's a Tennessee Walking Horse that's available, so I'm excited about that. It's been like 3 months or something since I last rode.

In other news, I went to Art Scape in Baltimore last weekend with Tahira and Jamal. That was fucking awesome! Then on Tuesday, I went to Open mic at the Soundry in Vienna and saw a 10 year old singing songs and playing the guitar like a real pro. There was several other performers, but he was the best.

I heard that there is a musician who is interested in using some of my artwork for his cd cover. And also, my ex set me up to do some portraiture for a musician in Iceland. Oh, and I picked up a new model in DC on the Fourth of July...

all and all, things are well.
