On Turning Six
The whole idea of it makes me feel
Like naïve, ignorant optimism has been sucked clean from me,
Stolen while I was blind, like a thief in the night
Likes the heartache of death
Or the toothache of poisoned candy
That has rotten my innocence
Eaten through my ongoing hopes
Dirtied and tainted my childhood dreams
You tell me it is too early to be cynical and bitter
But that is because you remain blind, numb
To the sins that lay before your unseeing eye
That childhood in only a temporary dream
That family, friends, and love don’t last forever.
But I can peer out the window and remember every sorrow.
At four, the fighting began
Watching my parents battle each other
Fighting with swords of words and flesh
At five and a half, the court papers arrived

Désespoir Amère d'un Gouverneur
[Bitter Despair of a Governor]
The Governor of the rancid and dreary Mayville was a quiet man among the average men of the town during the dark times. Most recognized him though for having unlimited intelligence and a love for the people and town he governed over. His heart was shattered though when he heard of his son’s death. Only a couple weeks ago the young lad had been healthy and fit, but had then caught small pox that sealed his doom. Making his way from city hall to the noiseless streets of the town, he only stopped every so often to sneeze from his terrible cold. The town was dead that evening, and he was the only one who walked the uneven path towards his house.
