# About me
Creative gadfly: freelance designer and artist, dabbling in numerous media and venues my entire life. Usually spoiled for choice and always looking for new opportunities.I have drawn comic books for DC, shot thousands of concert photographs, been a music columnist regional newspapers and zines, designed CDs and press kits for local bands, flyers and tickets for the infamous Pterodactyl Club in Charlotte, and somehow created an entire genre of sci-fi liquid latex costuming amongst Florida cyber-film-enthusiasts.
These days I design user interfaces and marketing materials for a rather high profile iOS/Android developer, push the limits of user experience and web standards design, write and illustrate fiction for a friend's online anthology, write and design gaming materials, advocate for bicycling usage and safety, occasionally spin minimal ambient techno, and blacklight bodypaint.

Days fall off the calendars like political dander
Most collars are terrible but you're still kind
Which is a rarity in a cynical pisspot of a world
So I hope your birthday was highlighted
Because, to me, you're damn well knighted
Happy Birthday!!!

Look at you taking pictures of all of my favorite bands. The jealousy, it covers me.

Thanks for the watch, and kind words. Those were indeed some great shows, and I was very fortunate to capture some beautiful moments on film. Been slacking on dA... I need to get back to posting the balance of my good photos. I do miss shooting concerts at times, although I don't miss the headache of dealing with film (especially ridiculous astronomy film like I used on all those 1990s shots)!
That week in October 1991 was dreamlike in its amazingness - seven amazing shows in six nights, and serendipitously meeting someone who is a close friend to this day.

Well, you're obviously a skilled photographer. I'm glad you were there to capture glimpses of those nights for those of us who couldn't be. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
And - astronomy film? As in, the kind used to take pictures of space? I can think of nothing more appropriate.

"Astronomy film" is/was 35mm film with extremely high light sensitivity (ISO 1600-3200, as opposed to "normal" film being ISO 100-400). It was in the past used for space photography but CCDs made astro-photos digital before consumer cameras made the jump. I discovered quickly how horrible concerts looked when photographed with a flash, so I started experimenting with high ISO film. It wasn't easy - the film was very expensive to acquire and process (up to $50/roll) - and on excursions like that I had to be careful with my shots because it wasn't the sort of film you could find in just any camera store if I ran low. (Just SO amazing that now I can take THOUSANDS of hi-res photos on my camera, and see which ones are good during the show.)
Even using astronomy film a concert could look "blah" when photographed if the light was too low, or too red, or just not positioned the right way. I was extremely fortunate to end up digging a bunch of bands that were playing large club venues that had good light systems, but weren't SO big as to be crazy about photographers (the only band in the photos shown that objected to me shooting was Curve, and they weren't asses about it.)
Still need to find the negatives for the one show from that amazing October week I don't have prints for - Catherine Wheel. Was supposed to be Chapterhouse but they cancelled, so I went to Catherine Wheel instead. GREAT show, but the worst lighting of the week. Plus I was running out of film and ended up with only about half a roll to shoot there.

Somehow I can't imagine Toni Halliday being camera shy. I'd kill to be able to see any one of those bands. And now I'm going to have to listen to Ferment on repeat tonight.

In case you're still around, do your best to see Slowdive now that they have reformed. Saw them three times in the SF Bay Area this last year and they are even better now than they ever were in the 1990s. Mind-blowingβ¦

Don't think it was so much Toni being camera shy as it was some bands allowing photography (press) only during the first few minutes of a show and then kick out the photographers. I didn't have a press pass, but did have a nice camera, and I remember after not sure how long - 2-3 songs maybe - Toni looking down at me and shaking her head. Was pretty clear that photography time was over, and I wasn't going to push my luck. Was weird enough being allowed to take photos of all these bands that - from their positions of magazine covers, MTV time, etc., - were "big names" but who were actually playing clubs of around 500 people...
