Funny you should ask. Β I got partway through writing the first volume when I thought of the name. Β Volume 1 (barely a volume at all because of all the one-panel pages) was originally just going to be a one-shot with some bits of dialogue and half-finished scenarios. Β In fact, I think the first scene of them standing there talking about random stuff was originally going to be the only scene ever. Β But I felt compelled to keep writing it until I had filled the first notebook. Β By the end of that, I decided to call it "Molasses" because it was simultaneously stylistically unrefined and incredibly pleasurable and self-indulgent to write, much like actual molasses is crude and rich to the taste. Β I also called it Molasses because, as the substance can have parts of it that are jarring and even awkward to the tongue, the story was jarring and awkward for me to read and write, and yet it has been one of the most guiltily pleasurable writing experiences of my (so far) life.
There's actually a part in volume 1 where April is eating a jar of molasses. Β Although it may seem that the title of the series comes from this scene, in actuality, this scene is there in reference to the metaphor above.
