Okay  So an adoptable is a original character/animal/species which are made to be sold (or even occasionally for free).  Sometimes they're inspired by a preexisting character, sometimes they're a completely new design  You can USE adoptables in lots of different ways; such as RPs, to collect, to just own something by your favorite artist, or to trade.  Depending on the rules stated in the description of the adoptable, you may or may not be able to trade, modify, or resell the adoptable.
You could also compare it to a pet shop ^^  A bunch of cats, dogs, and bunnies ready to buy from the owners. Then they belong to you.

Well I would suggest getting inspiration on what topics to base your adoptables off of.  Here are some I can think of...

   *Pokemon
   *Emotions
   *Music genres
   *Rare/endangered animals
   *Constellations

Notice how I didn't suggest super overused topics such as "seasons" or "gemstones".  Unless your adoptable is SUPER unique, it won't sell easily, if at all.

I also think it would be a good idea for you to look at adopts other people have made ^^  I'm apart of a couple really great adoptable groups that you should look into.

Another thing is to play around with the prices and see what people will pay for your quality and creativity ^_^
