Well, depends on what you want.
You might look for your preferred categories here by typing in the specific terms. Since there're up to myriads of groups it helps preventing getting lost by visiting the groups' profiles to look for their rules and contents and if they're still active at all (so called "super groups" usually are). On the other side, if listed groups are rather old but still have only a couple of members, they're very likely "dead". Further, there're often affiliate groups, too, that may be attractive.
Then please note, many admins allow anybody to join automatically while others don't, and same goes for contributions β but don't get disappointed if you are refused yet. At least you can watch all groups before joining.
Also I really recommend dealing with the reading stuff dawelcomewagon provides, as dA is a universe of its own. Anyway take your time & enjoy making and promoting your arts! ^^
