Man, whenever I come to your profile, it makes me want to go out, buy model and build it ASAP. Very inspiring. I used to love to build fighters and paint 'em up, add washes to bring out the depth, dry bushing to bring out the highlights and the weathering to add character.

*goes off to find a nice, big model of an F-16 Block 52*

Thanks so much, it really means alot to me to hear that, I know I'm not necessarily good, but hearing that at least one person likes them makes it worth it to me. Even better that it's more than one

I've actually got a HUGE backlog of figures I've been meaning to get photos of though, they're building up on a shelf right now, and to be honest, I think they're starting to resent me for it

Hey, dude, You have quite a grasp on model painting. I'd love to see the rest of your stuff!

What kind of paint to you use? Oil or Acrylic?

I'm an oil man. Love my Testors paint!

Thanks, I'll manage to get it all up here eventually. To be completely honest I'm not exactly sure WHAT kind of paints they are, I'd say acrylic on a guess but they could be latex for all I know , it's GW's Citadel Colour, if you happen to know it'd clear alot up for me

CC appears to be an acrylic paint. Testor's paint is oil based and requires thinner as opposed to water. Other than the odd experimenting, I've never used acrylic on models myself. I'd be curious about how the acrylic works compared to oil in the whole wash, dry brush and weathering thing. I wouldn't think it would be much, but I wonder about the, hell, I don't know... "feel" of painting with it. It seems it would be less viscous and not be too good on getting into the seams.

Hell, I only use oil because that's what my old man uses on his N-scale trains and it is what I was brought up on

Well, I was hoping you could possibly give me a few suggestions on paint schemes , I've decided on a blue scheme for my IS, but I'm stuck on my Clanners, I was thinking something red, but I'm open to anything, for IS or Clan.

I tried going through my fiction for some ideas(admittedly, it's all of the classic series), kinda odd how seldom there's a reference to a 'mechs colors, only one I can recall offhand is one slight observation in one of the "Twilight of the Clans" series.

KatWylder In reply to Xor-90 [2009-01-17 07:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, that all depends. Are you going for an original pain scheme, or the paint scheme of a canon unit, or one based on canon? If it's either of the last two options, I'd suggest checking camospecs.com for ideas. They've got a pretty big gallery, and some really talented artists.

Also, if you have any sourcebooks, that would be another place to check. The schemes aren't often mentioned in the novels, but many units' paint schemes are outlined in the sourcebooks.

Camospecs usually mentions what book they got a particular scheme from, though some schemes on the site were created by an artist, and then later canonized by the Higher Ups.

well, I'm going for an original scheme, but I wouldn't mind the colors be canon based, though it's for the entire "army", not a specific unit per se.

my issue with the sites though is simple, they aren't interesting. I don't mean to say that the paintjobs or the content is lacking in some it's simply that, you get no feel for what the idea or the thought process behind it, is. even with a description that might be supplied, I've always preferred getting the artists' actual thoughts, one-on-one as it were. I guess I just like talking to people , figured I'd try to get the thoughts of apparent fan.

A lot of it depends on the "personality" of the faction. I.e. Do they like things to be professional and uniform? Are they more eccentric? Do they want to be noticed? Are they more pragmatic? etc.

I'll be happy to lend a hand with critique, but I really can't tell you where to start without knowing anything about the faction.

For example, you would never see an Outworlds Alliance ASF painted up in canary yellow, because the OA favors "sky" paint schemes. However, it would be unusual to see a Wolf's Dragoons' ASF that *wasn't* some bright, bold color like that, because they want to "emphasize their presence" in a fight.

Likewise, Clan Wolf paint schemes tend to be fairly subtle--usually greys, tans--while Clan Diamond Shark use marine-inspired paint schemes of green and blues.

Thanks

The Clan though...been awhile since I actually tried deciding...CWIE I'd think, regimented, but not quite to the point of zealotry. I'd imagine that they'd typically hold to the Wolf combat ideals, but with the fractured touman, I'm not entirely sure...

KatWylder In reply to Xor-90 [2009-01-17 21:50:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, WiE differs a bit from the Crusader Wolves in their paint schemes. I'd describe the Crusaders' schemes as being camo-derived, but the WiE tends to just go with neutral colors like tans, white, grey, etc, and then some kind of trim. And of course, they also have the Wolf Spiders who keep their original colors.
