I recommend starting in the middle. The first few books in the Discworld series are really heavy fantasy that parodies real life and in my opinion they're not as good as the others. The series is kind of weird in that the books go in order, but they DON'T. Certain books come after certain other books, but you generally don't have to read the series in order. My absolute favorite is "Going Postal" and it's sequel, "Making Money", both of which are fairly recent. Or you could start with "Guards! Guards!", "Moving Pictures", or "Soul Music". Or you could ignore all of this and just choose a book at random.
