I do not have the best command over photoshop, so I do things very simply. There are probably better ways.
When I want to change colours or brighten certain colours, all I really do is use the selective colour option in photoshop to brighten certain colours when I'm trying not to change any others. You can use it to change colours of things as well, though sometimes it can really turn out dodgey.
I also just use Levels on photoshop, also to brighten or fade colours.
I also use filters and vigenettes sometimes to get different effects on colours.
That's all I can really think of
