you told me something about machines with souls... I'm interested in knowing more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yogensha-o-Jikan In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-07-28 01:28:55 +0000 UTC]

It's a simple little philosophy of mine. All machines have souls, and as a result all machines act differently. If you do something that a particular machine doesn't like it will retaliate (for instance, every time I try to install linux, this machine will reject linux shortly after a successful install and something goes missing from my windows partition). However if you do something the machine likes it will generally be more cooperative with things it doesn't like (my van for some odd reason runs a lot quieter and a lot smoother after cleaning all of the fast food wrappers out of it.)

I've experienced enough weird things occur because of something you wouldn't think could make a difference. I've seen my boss do the exact same thing I just tried 3 or 4 times already to fix a problem, and be successful on the first attempt, simply because the machine hates me. You may already have noticed this if you've ever worked on somebody else' computer. It may have the same operating system and be laid out the same way, but it will feel and operate like a totally different machine than yours.

hey man, how can I check an HFS drive's integrity (preferrably live). I've been experiencing crashes and kernel panics recently, and it might be the hard drive magically being unclean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yogensha-o-Jikan In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-07-16 07:33:48 +0000 UTC]

First the drive's mechanical operation. Open up the disk utility, select the drive and hit cmd+i. This will give you the SMART info.

if the drive is just unclean, you can also wipe the free space using the disk utility. I think it's under the partitions tab (it's been a while since i've used a mac.)

I don't know about file integrity, but if you have another drive to move it to, you can rewrite the info to that drive, zero out the installed drive, and reinstall the information. I do this with my terrabyte drives every now and then.

Hope this get's ya somewhere, when it comes to the operation of the mac OS i'm totally lost in many respects. Maybe there is a chkdsk command for it.

nvm.... the reason for the kernel panics is much much worse... blown capacitors.

Is there an issue using another brand of ram..

Someone told me before, that to make sure both ram will work, they need to be with the same brand..

cause the computer back home has 1gb apacer ddr2 and I want to place another 1gb but with another brand..

is it okay?

and is it okay if i'll buy 2gb instead..
so it'll have 3gb of ram ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yogensha-o-Jikan In reply to xiadrack [2009-05-15 00:55:09 +0000 UTC]

depends on how picky your board is. First of all they have to be the same frequency or neither of them will work. Some boards however, you have to have the same brand AND the same PART NUMBER.

If you have dual channel ram, the sticks have to be the same size so your computer can run in dual channel mode. Also you have to have an even number of sticks or else it will just revert back to single channel.

My suggestion is to buy a 4GB kit (2X2GB sticks), they're not that expensive anymore and you can circumvent all of these problems, just make sure your board can handle the frequency the sticks are rated at.

Hope this helped.

Remember that spanish thread in the forum?
That thread only got noticed by admins because you and some other guy necro'd it. It went unnoticed for a few years.

GenshiHebi In reply to Yogensha-o-Jikan [2009-02-17 06:35:23 +0000 UTC]

coincidentally, dA admins don't seem to care about the Linux/Unix/BSD forums. I've only seen two locked threads there. That spanish thread was one, and a thread an admin started.

also, once spammers find that out. I'm sure that forum would be full of spam.

Yogensha-o-Jikan In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-02-18 01:41:55 +0000 UTC]

In wich case we would need a dedicated admin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GenshiHebi In reply to Yogensha-o-Jikan [2009-02-18 04:38:29 +0000 UTC]

unfortunately, I don't know of any current admins that even know what Linux is. Afaik, it's a @ person's responsibility to monitor threads.

Perhaps a thread requesting @ people to monitor it, or we could just monitor it ourselves, the Debian way (if you approve of the Debian way that is).
