I know I've said that I'm a professional artist, and my work here perhaps doesn't represent that in many eyes. But I'm primarily a sculptor, and I do get paid for it. In my eyes, if you've made a regular (or semi-regular) paycheck off of it, you're a professional. I'm trying to develop my 2-D art skills (beyond drafting or lofting), so I've mostly posted my work here in an effort to see if it gets better over time. In the past I've done everything from theatrical makeup, to mixed-media figurative art sculpture, (read that as puppets and dolls- but not the children's plaything type- [these dolls sold for anywhere from $200 to $1000]) to Mardi Gras floats to grave markers. Wood carving, sculptural plasterwork, metal casting, tailoring and costuming, you name it. If it has anything to do with 3-D artwork, I've probably done a bit of it sometime in my past. When I'm not working on various artworks or craftworks, I'm using the degree I earned in yacht design to design boats.
Folks: If you like my work, please comment. If you don't like it, also comment, but tell me why, and what I can do to improve it. I'm always open to constructive criticism. How else can I improve? I know there are artists here who have so many comments that they can't read them all. I'm not one of them. I appreciate every comment and will respond to every one of them.

Don't I know it. It reminds me of one of my favourite artist quotes. Raphael once said to Michaelangelo on the difficulty in getting a patron, "Artists are like whores in that they both prostitute themselves for money, only the whores are more honest about it." Hey, it's usually either art or money, right? We can only hope for those times when the two coincide.

What I've discovered is you really have to have a passion for something to do something you enjoy as a job. For me, I love to draw, but I'm not passionate about it. I discovered I can't draw as a profession. For 2 summers I drew for a comic book company freelance while their resident artist was off on vacation. I thought I'd love it. My dream job! Nope. I HATED it. It literally is a grind, and there is so little artistic freedom I couldn't let myself spread my wings and fly. The times I did the writer had a fit and I had to redraw those pages and not get paid for those redrafts. From what I've heard from other professional comic book artists, it's like that at EVERY comic book company with no exceptions. "It's a job, not your living room" was what I was told. I discovered that drawing for me is a release for creative energy, and my character limits it to be an unstable source of income, if any. I draw because I enjoy it. When I stop enjoying a project I stop and never go back to it. It's my life, after all, and I decided long ago that as far as my free time goes I will not do anything I don't enjoy unless I have to (attending to life and it's responsibilities; i.e. paying the bills, making good on promises, etc.). I wish I had a passion for drawing. Instead, I merely love it, and that's not good enough to do as a living. I have the talent, not the desire. Some say "that's sad". Weird, because I'm very happy.

I know exactly what you're speaking of. I started out as a sculptor. And I've tried just about every type of media. (Wood, stone, metal, clay, cloth, even cake and other confectionery. You name it, I've probably sculpted in it.) I loved it, and I still love it. But I couldn't make a living at it. One thing is that I hate to repeat things. I have severe ADD that wasn't diagnosed until I was in my late 30's, as a result, I lose interest in something rather quickly. (Since then I've discovered that a large number of intelligent and creative people suffer from the condition. If you find that you lose interest in doing something again {like churning out page after page of comics} you might consider getting yourself tested for it. I only say this because it's an insidious condition that can make your life miserable.) But in any event, like in 2-D art, once you factor in the cost of the materials, your time in creating that particular work of art your put a price tag on it. Most people can't believe it's that difficult to make that particular piece of art and you're just jacking up the price because you're greedy. I used to make collectable OOAK art dolls (I preferred to call them mixed-media figurative art sculptures.) Each one of them took no less than 40 hours to complete (at 8 hours a day of work), but try to convince the average mouth-breathing member of the unwashed masses of that. That's why I restore the architectural trim of historic buildings. It allows me to practice my art a bit, but what's more, I get a steady paycheck out of it.

Hey, no worries. Of most of the computer animation artists on here, yours look like you've put the time and effort in them to create original artworks. (You'd be surprised how few people do this.) Your work actually tells a story, and I admire that. Please keep up the good work!

Thanks! The reason is that most of them have been sold. I've got a few photos of some of them, but the truth is I'm not a very good photographer. As a result, most of them look like crap. Another reason is that most of them sold before I remembered to take photos. But, I'll try to find and post what I've got.

You're quite welcome! Actually, I cruised into your site after perusing Bambs79's truly excellent artwork I came across his drawing of your Barbara and Urtha characters. Very interesting, I must say. Your characters remind me of the comics I used to buy back in the day, as it were. When I see them I think of Luke Cage (back when he had long sideburns and wore an open-necked shirt with a chain belt), along with his partner Iron Fist. (Remember "The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu"?) I won't say how long I've been buying comics, but when I started, the covers screamed out at you: STILL ONLY 25 CENTS!!"
