# About me

Dear All,

It has been said plenty of times that change is the one thing in life that people don’t want to have to go through. The lament often heard is “Why don’t things just stay the same?” because at that moment in life, everything is so perfect that it doesn’t make sense that it could ever be any other way. I remember I used to say this a lot when I was younger, with a life like mine, inconstant and always moving, it was natural that I would eventually get frustrated by change.

We are always given the impression that life is most beautiful when it is stable, and indeed the stability in life can be beautiful. It is always wonderful to know that there are things in life that you can count on, a mother’s love, spring after winter (please lord, let it get hot again already!) and the leap that comes before the fall. These are the things that allow you to wake up every morning into a world that is relatively the same.

Today, I had to take a look back into my life. In doing so, I realized how much I had changed as a person. The woman sitting here writing this would not have recognized the girl I was five years ago, she who had so much fear, so much doubt, such a need to be loved. She who could not love herself, and thus could never truly love others. Yet I realize that if I had not undergone all the changes in my life, if things had stayed the way I wanted them to I would have been a weaker version of myself.

Things don’t stay the same, because the world is built on change. The world is built on progress, and on growth. That is the only thing that has allowed us to progress through the centuries as a species, that change, that adaption, that ability to metamorphosis into something else after destruction has left almost nothing in its wake.

It would be grossly unfair for me to say that change is always something that is inspired by a need to recover from some tragedy that preceded it. Usually, tragedy is last nudge onto a path that we should have already been walking on, the mother of regret. Change comes in all sorts of ways, and most of the time we barely notice it is happening, until you wake up five years later and you’re someone else.

Embrace the changes that occur in your life. For they are the biggest blessings. Sure, its might be nice (in theory) if you could halt change from happening at a certain point, and keep things the same. However, what if change was something that wasn’t present in the world, and you were in a situation where you really needed change and it wasn’t possible to have it…wouldn’t that suck?

I’m happy that people can safely say “Philippa, you aren’t the same person you were five years ago” because at least that exhibits growth.

And since no one’s complaining, I suppose I am growing well!

Wonder who I will be next year…

Signed sincerely,
