My advises   :
- the big and essential part is UV mapping. use a good UV mapping tool such as "Heads Up UV Layout"!
- learn Photoshop tricks
- look at other people works (specially the breakdown shots) and try to understand how they did it!

3DMotive - Creating and Texturing a Fantasy Shield With DDO
