Hey Beth! How's it going? Have you been practising with the new brushes?Β

bbbbethhhh In reply to Rustveld [2014-03-18 07:08:56 +0000 UTC]

Hi Mitchell! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this I haven't been on DA in months it seems =/ college has been really busy. I did practise for a bit but admittedly have been taking a more traditional route of late to tie in with what I've been doing at college! Hope to get back into digital painting in the summer, I did really like the brushes you reccomended though!Β

Hope you're doing ok? And again really sorry it took a ridiculously long time to respond, take care!Β

Rustveld In reply to bbbbethhhh [2014-03-18 23:34:25 +0000 UTC]

Hey Beth! No worries, we can't be on dA all the time right?Β
You can't go wrong with the traditional route, I'm sure it will help you with your digital work.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

It's been a hectic last few weeks, Β and to top it off my grandmother passed away on the 14th. So I had to take a flight back to Aruba for the funeral. But I get to see my family again, so it's not all bad. I'm going to take this time to rest and get inspired again.
Take care!

Hi Mitchell! Apologies at the time its taken me to reply (again!) I've just finished all my college work now though so I have no excuse to not be on dA!Β
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother, must be incredibly difficult on top of everything else :/. It's good you're with your family during such a difficult time though, you can support each other Β

I like the looser stuff you uploaded recently! Hopefully it will inspire me to get back into digital painting I have no excuse now as I have the whole summer to immerse myself in art haha.Β
Β
Take care! Β

No worries Beth! I know you've been busy. I'm glad to hear that you have some free time now! ( to update your gallery I hope Β *hint hint* )

Thanks for the kind words. The most difficult part was saying it out loud, that made it instantly sink in.Β
It was nice seeing my family again though.

Thank you! I'm having fun experimenting with different techniques. I'm trying to channel my inner child..which isn't that easy haha.
I hope you do get back into painting again, digital or traditional, it's all good.
Β
Take care!

A relatively fast response for me!Β

I've been doing some digital studies, however it's an uphill battle so far haha. This may sound like a really vague question but do you have any tips for subtly blending in photoshop? I'm finding my paint strokes are quite muddy at the moment =/ but perhaps I'm not being patient enough! I have the opacity and flow set to pen pressure but other than that I'm trying to not to change the other opacity settings because I think that will make my work even more muddy.Β

I hope you are doing better now, and your family too of course. I suppose it will just take time, but as I said it is good you were all there to support one another Β

I think I remember reading Picasso saying something about how hard it is to revert back to that child-like state where you don't really have any inhibitions about your art and you just draw what you love (it was something along those lines haha), so I see what you mean! It's good to be more loose sometimes and just concentrate on your own ideas and getting them down on to a surface Β

Take care and hope you upload more of your new work too!Β

Rustveld In reply to bbbbethhhh [2014-06-05 14:20:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha that is fast indeed!

I would love to give you some tips! If you can send me your studies, I'll be able to see exactly what you're struggling with. If you'd like I could do a paint-over as well.Β
I'm doing better now, thanks.

I think he said that we are all born artists, but lose that part of us once we grow up? Something along those lines. I think my attitude towards art changed when I decided to make it my profession. That added pressure that wasn't there before. But I've come to far to quit now haha!Β

I'll be waiting to receive your studies! Ah yes, I've peen pondering where to post my stuff. They aren't really finished but I do want to share them, so I'm thinking I'll be posting them on my tumblr.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bbbbethhhh In reply to Rustveld [2014-06-05 19:04:17 +0000 UTC]

That would be so helpful! If you're sure you don't mind? I can send you this study I'm really struggling with at the moment although it is awful, I feel like I'm getting worse! It's a photostudy of Phoebe Tonkin Β Where should I send it? I could send you the PSD file with all the layers if it is easier plus you get the full resolution that way.Β

It was definitely something like that, and it's very true I think. I know what you mean, the minute you decide to start taking it seriously the pressure starts to build, haha.Β

Tumblr is a good place to post studies, I've seen lots of artists do that now although you don't get as much feedback sadly.

Thanks again for help, I really appreciate it! Β

I know that feeling all too well. But I'm sure your getting better. It's just that your ability to see has surpassed your technical skills.Β www.marcdalessio.com/wp-conten…
Oh I know her from H2O, she's pretty.

It's time to read "Art and Fear" again, haha.

I made a tumblr account because I noticed people sharing my stuff there. It's a great place to get inspiration. Not so much for getting feedback like you said, I go to conceptart.org for that.

You're welcome Beth!

Hey yeah I commented on your sketchbook on CA a little while ago haha. I am sort of... Seemed to have lost my motivation somewhat - mainly because I get frustrated with not improving and such. I'm trying to study a lot but I get put off when I have nothing to show for it

Your new work looks great btw! You must draw so often, I need to take a leaf out of your book

take care

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rustveld In reply to bbbbethhhh [2012-01-11 15:34:35 +0000 UTC]

I know the feeling, it is really frustrating. I was getting tired of letting my lack of motivation stop me from making art, so I forced myself to draw/paint. I would open photoshop and just start studying. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part.
I'm glad I did, because now I draw/paint everyday. I find it helps to keep a logbook. I would like to keep a schedule, but I'm not that organised yet.

Thank you! Hopefully I'll see some new work from you soon.

Take care

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bbbbethhhh In reply to Rustveld [2012-01-11 22:21:44 +0000 UTC]

Glad I'm not the only one! I think one of the most frustrating things is feeling like you don't have the freedom to draw whatever you want, because you feel like you don't have the ability to yet. I have found that forcing myself to draw is helping, however I'm trying to do it in a way so that it doesn't feel like a chore.

I like the idea of a logbook! Think I might have to try this myself, or at least make a plan/schedule I can stick to - maybe it'll be easier to see progress

I was wondering if the new muscle studies you posted on CA have been helping your imaginative pieces? I find it so hard to remember them!

Hope you don't mind me asking so many questions btw, take care

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rustveld In reply to bbbbethhhh [2012-01-12 04:31:57 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! It's especially frustrating when you have the knowledge put can't yet execute it. But that's exactly why we should continue. After awhile it isn't a chore anymore, it becomes really enjoyable, you just have to do it consistently. Mix it up a bit, study different subjects, read art books, watch tutorials, try new mediums, etc.

I got the idea to keep a logbook from this [link] and this
[link] I found these extremely useful to stay motivated, maybe you will too.

The new anatomy studies have already proven to be really useful. I can pretty much remember the skeleton structure and can imagine it when drawing the figure. The muscles not as much. I can remember the general shapes but it's a lot to learn and it hasn't really sunken in my brain yet.

I don't mind at all! I love when people ask me questions about art, it makes me think and analyze what I'm doing. Many comments on CA have made me notice things about my work I wouldn't have on my own. Cheers

bbbbethhhh In reply to Rustveld [2012-01-16 16:37:41 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the delayed reply Had a look at those links, they're really motivating, especially 'steal like an artist' haha. I'm glad to here you're making progress with your studies

I was wondering if you could help me with cross-hatching? Recently I've discovered that the way I've been rendering my sketches in pencil isn't really effective and is a beginner technique, I sort of shade as if I'm colouring so my shading often looks bruised and uneven. I'm trying to do it in a sort of cross-hatching technique where you build up form using individual strokes, and it's definitely a lot better. BUT I always struggle with how to begin cross-hatching... Do you just jump in, or do you block out the darkest areas first, or shade the whole area lightly so that you're not working on a white surface?

I was looking at your sketchbook, and particularly in this image [link] I don't get how you can get your cross-hatching to look so seamless? especially on the face as it's so detailed. Just wanted to know how you go about it I guess! Thanks for your help

Rustveld In reply to bbbbethhhh [2012-01-17 02:21:02 +0000 UTC]

The title is amusing haha. I'm glad you find them to be motivating as well.

Somebody recently asked me about that actually. Here's my reply [link]
I usually begin were I know there'll be a cast shadow, e.g. between the eyes, below the nose and mouth.

For the one you're asking about specifically I used a brush to blend the pencils. I don't really recommend it though, it can get dirty looking and you loose a lot of your pencil strokes. But it doesn't hurt to experiment.

Also I found this to be helpful [link] . Hope that helps, cheers.

I was wondering how you got so good at drawing people, like in your 'Cast of Aitios' on here, their poses seem really lifelike and believable. I'm struggling with drawing figures atm, I'm not really sure if I should just draw them over and over or if there's any techniques haha.

I agree, I love seeing other peoples ideas and pieces on the same theme, it's really interesting. I'd love to see yours, I bet it's awesome! Good luck with your exams, hope they go/ have gone well! (Sorry this is a late reply and you're probably already done haha)

I will upload my exam stuff eventually I'm actually looking forward to A2, getting to make up my own question and stuff, it seems really cool.

Good luck with your exams too! if you haven't already done them, i've finished all mine now thank god T_T freedom at last! Good luck with your results
