Alright so this is my first fursuit that I'm making. Since I was new I decided I was going to buy a basic canine head base of esty

and I was wondering really first whats a good place to buy fur, because I've tried a few craft shops by my house but have no fur, and second, with the foam do you just put the fur on it or does the fur go on something else over the foam? Heh

blueraccoon23 In reply to doqgie [2015-04-20 02:46:30 +0000 UTC]

Buying a base is probably the best way to go first in my opinion with making a fursuit. You'll be able to really see the different shapes in the face and what connects to what. Poly foam is what you need to use, nothing other than that, its very easy to carve/shape and glue together, fur and foam work well together! You can purchase Poly Foam from either Jo Anns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby or any craft/artsy store. Do not buy fur in just any basic art store though! It might fall apart and is usually really weird to work with. Try purchasing your fur from Mendel's.com or Distinctive fabrics.com, They have alot of options for fur, but if you're looking for just more basic single-colored fur (and on a budget) try Fabric.com! The fur on Fabric.com is listed under "Luxury Shag Fur"

I hope that helped! I wish you the best of luck of the making of your first fursuit, If you need any extra help, i'm more than happy to help you out! ^^

Oh wow. Thank you for a really good explanation.
I went ahead and looked up some of the Poly Foam at Jo Anns
and now I'm wondering if a certain thickness works better
or is just a matter of your desired look that you want to go for?

And I also just googled up the sites you suggested and narrowed
it down to being Fabric.com due to my character being pretty simple
in coloring hah.

Anyways so when your just putting on the fur it's just a matter of
cutting it out and then just gluing it onto the form or?

I recommend using 1 inch Foam, works better and easy to use. When you're ready to actually fur the fursuit, you will want to cut 1 - 4 inch duct tape strips and place them fully all over your fursuit's head, draw on the markings of your fursona onto the tape and cut those out, dart as needed. Sew the fur together! Dont glue it all down, the seams will show and look ugly after a while. You can find youtube videos on how to go about correctly putting the head together. Not sure if its ever shown but use a razor blade on the back of the fur fabric to cut the pieces out easier! Works better than scissors.

I've seen some people sew all of the fur together then
it over the ears and such then just glue it down on some of
the parts. Would you recommend this or more of a combo
of the two?

And trust me I've looked at many many videos of tutorials on
how to do it but haven't found one that made a lot of sense
because I haven't found one on doing the fur on a moveable
jaw set. Would you know if it was the same way you would
do it normally or a little bit different?

blueraccoon23 In reply to doqgie [2015-04-20 03:26:22 +0000 UTC]

I try sticking with the more toony look with my suits, so those don't come with a moveable jaw. I've done a fursuit for a friend that has a moveable jaw but it just didn't come out the greatest in my opinion since i've never experienced making a moving jaw before hand, so i really wouldn't know how to fur one D:
You can sew down all the fabric then glue around some parts. For example you can glue the bridge of the nose, the lips, base of ears, back and front cheeks and around the edge of the head on the bottom

doqgie In reply to blueraccoon23 [2015-04-20 03:33:17 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of just doing toony however the base
I was ordering had the option of a moveable and I
just wasn't sure how that all would work in the end.

But alright that makes alot of sense. Oh and okay another
question. Something different this time. How would you make
the hand paws? That's something that's been confusing
me for quite some time.

blueraccoon23 In reply to doqgie [2015-04-20 23:13:06 +0000 UTC]

(first off, i apologize about the delayed response!)
Hand paws are super easy to make, all you have to do is trace your hand to a piece of paper with one color, then draw a paw shape around the traced hand line with a different color. cut that out and lay it on your fur fabric (or draw the markings of the paw colors on the paper and cut them out, putting the pattern to color) just make two mirrored cut outs of the paw. cut out little circles for the paw pads and sew that to one side before sewing the two handpaw cut outs together! you can shave them or add claws which is optional (shave the paws before applying the pawpads though)
Hope that helps, i apologize if thats a bit confusing D:

Oh that makes alot of sense.
Why didn't I think of that xD Hm.

Well now here's another question
what about tails and feet ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blueraccoon23 In reply to doqgie [2015-04-21 05:41:12 +0000 UTC]

tails are done the same way as paws, draw out a template, cut out, mirror the pattern and sew together then stuff!
youll need to watch a video for feet paws, since it is pretty hard to explain how to make them, its almost like making another fursuit head haha, alot of shaping and foam work.
I dont want to confuse you about them, you can click this link www.matrices.net/footpaws.asp and it will help you out alot about makin' footpaws

Oh awesome awesome.

And one more final question, not sure if you do these
are not. But do you know a good way to make the
body suit portion of the fursuit in a good and easy way?

I wasn't going to do it if it was going to be too hard but
some people say it's simple others say it isn't so I figured
I should ask from your stand point on it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blueraccoon23 In reply to doqgie [2015-04-22 01:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Best way honestly is to make a Duct Tape Dummy. You can find a painters suit in any hardware store or Walmart, slip that on and have one or two people help you start taping up your body. Once its all done, you can cut one big line from your neck, down your arm, waist, and legs and do the same to the other side. Draw on your markings and put the pattern to the fur color. Body suits are a bit hard to do, so it might take some practice to get over the bumps in the road during the process

Oh interesting. Well if you don't mind me asking.
Is it possible to get a quote from you?

I just wanted to know how much it would cost to get one
done by you because your style is so adorable. I mean yes
I am making my own - but still xD

Yes, you may email me at BlueCoonsCreations@gmail.com for a full final quote. But to just get a rough idea, my full suits start at $1,000 (:
