I love your more recent work...I'm only sorry we haven't kept in touch better. Hope that everything is going well. I don't update that often anymore on here or myspace, but you are always welcome to find me on facebook. (Ashley Lynn Watts) or on my blogs. littlelostgaijin@blogspot and @wordpress.

Examples of what I mean when I say there's motion and something to focus on in a picture, rather than blankness.

[link]

Notice the use of angles and how much/little of the subject we can see and the amount of space around it.

bookworm77 In reply to bgyoshi [2009-10-14 08:22:02 +0000 UTC]

I understand that. But blankness can be as powerful as busy-ness. For example:

[link]

Of course, my image is considerably less contrived and, therefore, less composed, but it's not impossible for a mostly blank image to be very effective, and something intrigues me about "Upwards." I wish I had done more of them so I could really see what works and what doesn't work about it. I have no real reference.

But whatevs.

What works is the emphasis of blankness. Look at the composition of that picture, the terrain is level with the border, the person is parallel with the border, the burned in clouds travel upwards. There's focus and defined direction in the image.

Heey. About the 3 variations - I think they all convey different moods - there really isn't a "best" variation of the picture. If you're going for family photo album look pick the regularish or the b/w one, if you're going for artsy the b/w or the cold tinted one. They are all suitable for a whole range of purposes.

btw, nice gallery.

bookworm77 In reply to SahmJ [2009-09-08 08:09:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I'm glad you think they all stand on their own. I'm not sure what kind of mood brings out the most in the shot yet, you know? But your feedback is greatly appreciated, as is your compliments.

Feedback is always my pleasure haha

If you want a personal opinion of taste, I'd pick Caleb 04. But yeah, I wish you had a macro lens too

bookworm77 In reply to SahmJ [2009-09-08 08:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was using a friend's camera and it was very spontaneous, so I didn't even think to click it over to the general macro focus until later. I'm kicking myself about it now.

hey, thanks for all the comments on all my redwall fanart, glad you liked them
for the Brocktree pic, it was made with oil paint, and none of those deviations were made with the use of watercolors, though aboard the mirmidon was made using acrilics

btw have you seen my non- redwall gallery?
