the colour of autumn while winter's
fingertips trace unpadded ribs
with a wry smile.

your worth is no more than your use.
Speak anger into midnight, shatter
silence as you shattered empty
beer bottles against the wall,
bland and desolate but for the
newly formed craters, crushed white
powder, consume too many walk
from fire to ice for both will
burn and blister and breathe.
Stop calling, stop writing, don't utter,

Remember whenwhen the paper lies rain-soaked,
crumpled and torn, will you still
read the letters scrawled into
spoiled potential and bleeding,
smudging chaos as turbulent
as the slate grey ocean in
once sparkling eyes?
when all the wax has been burnt,
smoke spirits dancing lazily towards
a once starry sky, now hidden
behind a red glow of city lights,
houses, cars, floodlights leaving
none to the imagination but spectres
lurking in elongated shadows,
the haunting cry of a fox
disrupting the hum,
when the grandfather clock has
run down and you cannot find
the key to rewind the spring,
because we cannot rewind;
only venture forwards with
each moment becoming a
past, footprints in the sand
to be erased by a dispassionate
surf and eroded pebbles,
when your favourite pair of jeans
finally wears through, tearing
catastrophically down the middle
just like your wounded being,
for everything can only take
so much abrasion before it gives,
and none of us are immortal,
none are invincible and
