Hey! I have a quick question I've been meaning to ask you for a while now. Earlier this year, maybe late last year, there was a thread about pen & ink in the General forums. I remember you said you had issues with the coverage on the Hunt or Higgins india ink, and I was wondering if you could recommend a particular brand with better coverage?

I have a big bottle of Higgins india ink that won't be empty for a while, but I was still thinking of trying another brand when it ran out. I sometimes need to cover large areas w/flat black and I'm finding it takes 2-3 coats.

Hey there. Yeah, unfortunately, anything with the Higgins name on it seems a bit diluted. It's a bummer, since my former favorite was Sandford's Design black ink, which has since been enveloped into the Higgins line.

I've had a bit better luck with Speedball Super Black waterproof, but I still allow it to evaporate and condense a bit before using, just to be safe. The Winsor & Newton drawing inks aren't bad, but since they use a shellac in their formula, it dries with a bit of a shine, which I'm not particularly fond of. I've been wanting to try Sennelier ink for awhile. I've heard good things, and I would hope that the higher price would equal higher quality.

I wonder how good sumi inks would do, or whether or not I should take up grinding inks myself, but I'm not that far into experimenting with it at this point. I've also recently been toying with the idea of trying screen printing ink as drawing medium, since lately I've been doing a lot of brush work, and I doubt I'd have much problem with the thicker quality of that kind of ink using such a method.

I don't know if any of that helps, but that's what I've got on my end.

saintartaud In reply to bustermaximus [2012-10-27 15:38:12 +0000 UTC]

No, that helps a lot actually.

I've actually thought about trying the Winsor & Newton inks, but the shellac put me off as well. I know I've tried that Speedball ink in the distant past, but I can't remember very well how they handled. And I don't think I've seen the Sennelier inks before, but I can check around town.

I never would have considered sumi inks. Are they waterproof? I like being able to color with watercolor washes, so that's important. I wouldn't use screenprinting inks myself, unless I suppose you thinned them out.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! I'll save this for later and see what I can find.

Thankyou very much for the advice. I took several notes, did some research on Japanese and Asian creatures and mythology and have some fun ideas for artwork. This was a great help. I hope others benefit from this thread too.

It's been a while since I stopped by to look at your gallery. Your rendering and coloring skills have improved. Both look smoother and cleaner to me, and demonstrate greater control.

Nice job.

Is there really a "smacked around by Darkmir" club???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bustermaximus In reply to Darkmir [2010-07-26 19:49:31 +0000 UTC]

As far as I know, there is no official club. It's more like a secret society.

Thanks for the compliment. Going back to school has allowed for me to play and experiment a lot, and just generally figure out things that I had ignored or forgotten in the past.
