have you tested the new D300 as well? I was considering to get it but it seems that the D200 is better in terms of price/performance.
Would the 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR be a good starter? Cheers

No I have not tested the D300. The end of the line is always how much you are prepared/afford to spend. Reasons to get the D300 over the D200 are colour saturation (much more vivid on the D300 straight out of the cam), the enviable 51 af sensors (15 of which are cross type), much better viewfinder, much better (worlds better than anything on any other DSLR except D3) screen, Better highlights/shadows, faster fps, live view + focus. If you could live without these the D200 is the same camera with the same ISO performance. I know I'd get the D300 (and dream of a D3).
A 16 -85 mm is a good starter, even the cheaper 18-55 is good. If you can splash out the cost an 18-200 3.5 - 5.6 VR will cover most situations until you can start collecting lenses.

I'm guessing that you are saying this because of the large amount of shots taken. The reason for this is that since I had never taken shots of a fast moving subject and had only just recently started using this camera and lens, I put it on continuous high-speed and blasted away. The camera had calculated that I had space for about 400+ shots at Jpeg fine quality while in reality there was double that space because the jpegs were not really large files considering the large amount of blue sky in the shots.

I do enjoy the airshow but I do not go to see it any more. I have taken some good shots using a canon film slr but I have never tried that sort of thing with my digital camera.
The file size greatly depends on the colours the photo contains, I have a 2GB card and I can fit more than a 1000 photos on it

do u frequently go for walks in nice places with greenery or do u go looking for the insects etc?
my environmental science teacher has some pretty amazing nature shots..he published a book with his photography and he's won awards for them.. yours remind me of his

Usually I go specifically looking for insect macro shots. Unfortunately in Malta nice places with greenery are few and far between and the species of insects that live here are limited. Still if you're lucky you can still get some good shots.
